What Is An Ultrasound - Alcove Health Women's Clinic Newport News

What is an ultrasound?

Whether you plan to carry or abort the pregnancy, an ultrasound gives you the information you need to plan your next step.

You probably got to this blog by asking, “What Is An Ultrasound?” It’s a common question that we’re here to help you answer.

What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound scan is a medical exam that uses high-frequency sound waves to capture live images from the inside of your body. The sound waves are at too high of a pitch for the human ear to hear.

Also known as sonography, an ultrasound is a noninvasive, painless procedure that produces images of organs, soft tissues, blood vessels, and blood flow, from inside the body. These images are used for medical analysis. Unlike other imaging techniques, ultrasound uses no radiation. For this reason, it’s the preferred method for viewing a developing fetus during pregnancy.

To prepare for the exam, you will most likely be lying down on a table with a section of your body exposed. Depending on the area being examined, you may need to change positions during the exam to allow the technician to have better access.

An ultrasound technician, called a sonographer, will apply a special lubricating jelly to your skin. This prevents friction and helps transmit the sound waves so the ultrasound transducer can rub across the skin area. The transducer has a similar appearance to a microphone and sends high-frequency sound waves through the body. The waves echo as they hit a dense object, such as an organ or bone. Those echoes are then reflected back into a computer image. The images can provide valuable information for diagnosing and directing treatment for a variety of diseases and conditions.

Sometimes, ultrasounds are done inside your body. In this case, the transducer is gently inserted into a natural opening in your body. To evaluate pregnancies under 12 weeks, the medical standard is a transvaginal ultrasound, which means the transducer is gently inserted into the vagina in order to view the uterus, fetal development, and ovaries.

Ultrasound is considered a safe and affordable imaging technology to help a doctor diagnose and direct treatment for a variety of diseases and conditions. There are no known risks. You should be able to return to normal activities immediately after an ultrasound.

Ultrasound is a valuable tool, but it does have limitations. Sound waves don’t travel well through air or bone, so ultrasound isn’t effective at imaging body parts that have gas in them or are hidden by bone, such as the lungs or head.

Ultrasound may also be unable to see objects that are located very deep in the human body. To view these areas, your healthcare provider may need to order some other types of tests.

Whether you plan to carry or abort the pregnancy, an ultrasound gives you the necessary information you need to make a safe decision about the next step of your pregnancy. Alcove Health provides free ultrasounds to:

  1. confirm the location of the pregnancy – to ensure that it is not ectopic but has implanted correctly in the uterus.
  2. visualize and measure fetal cardiac activity, assuring fetal viability.
  3. allow measurement of the gestational age and provide an estimated date of delivery.

Here at Alcove Health, we provide limited obstetrical ultrasounds free of charge. We will talk you through every step of the process during the informed consent, and we will be considerate of your modesty. All ultrasounds begin with an abdominal ultrasound. If it is determined that the pregnancy is under 12 weeks gestation, the next step is a transvaginal ultrasound. This view allows for the most accurate measurements and assessment of pregnancy.
