So many women struggle with their mental health, and I have too. I know it’s not easy. It’s actually really hard sometimes. The hopelessness is heavy and crushing. The anxiety is sickening and debilitating.
If you’re struggling or have struggled in the past with your mental health, you may worry, “Will I have postpartum depression or postpartum anxiety?” But even before that, with the image of a positive pregnancy test fresh in your mind, you may wonder about anxiety/depression during pregnancy.
Well, I want you to know what that looks like and what ways you can seek support.
We hear a lot about postpartum depression, but women may also experience prenatal depression – depression during pregnancy. Anyone can experience depression, but if you have a history of mental health or mood disorders, it could increase your risk of experiencing it.

It’s common to experience anxiety during pregnancy. Like prenatal depression, if you have a history with anxiety or mental health disorders, it could put you more at risk of experiencing anxiety during pregnancy.

If you’ve considered abortion because of anxiety and depression during pregnancy, you’re not alone. Other women have struggled with the same thoughts. Many find it isolating because everyone focuses on postpartum depression and anxiety, but not anxiety and/or depression during pregnancy.
As much as we realize these emotions and feelings are temporary, it doesn’t make it any easier.
Your first step is to talk to your OBGYN about how you’re feeling and get treatment. You deserve to be in a healthy place before making a pregnancy decision like that.
I know seeking help can be hard. We may feel ignored or dismissed when we do try to advocate for ourselves OR we feel unworthy of help. I encourage you to try, even if it’s uncomfortable. I know you might not believe it, but you are worthy of care. Here’s what you can do:
