Considering The Abortion Pill?

You just found out you’re pregnant . . . now what?

The Abortion Pill looks like a quick and easy fix to all of your problems.

But is it really? Be informed before you make a decision.

So what exactly is the Abortion Pill? It is a combination of two different medications taken two days apart. These pills cause a medical abortion (another name for the abortion pill) when taken within 10 weeks from the first day of your last menstrual period.

Pill #1 – Taken to Block Progesterone

RU486 (mifepristone) is taken to block the hormone progesterone from getting to the uterus. This drug causes the lining of the uterus to break down and the embryo to disconnect from the uterine wall. Once these happen, the heartbeat will stop.

Pill #2 – Taken to Expel the Pregnancy

The second medication, misoprostol, is taken 48 hours after the first one. This drug causes uterine cramping to empty the pregnancy. Heavy cramping and bleeding can occur with this step and may last 1-2 weeks.

DO NOT TAKE THE ABORTION PILL IF . . .

It has been more than 70 days (10 weeks gestation) since the first day of your last menstrual period

You have an ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy outside of the uterus)

You are experiencing bleeding problems or taking anticoagulant (blood-thinning) drug products

Do not take the abortion pill without accurate medical information about your pregnancy first. It’s risky and dangerous, and you deserve all the information you need to make a safe decision for your reproductive health.

  • IF for any reason you change your mind after taking the first medication, but BEFORE taking the second medication, a reversal protocol could be possible.
  • It is best to begin the reversal protocol within 72 hours of taking the RU486 pill.
  • High doses of progesterone are used to counteract RU486. The success rate is between 64-68%.

KNOW FOR SURE

Schedule Your FREE Ultrasound

An ultrasound exam plays an important role in your decision, whether it is abortion, adoption, or parenting, and provides you with the information you need to make an informed decision about your reproductive health.

Location of Pregnancy:

An ultrasound is necessary to confirm the location of your pregnancy, showing if your pregnancy has implanted correctly in the uterus, or if you are experiencing an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy can be life-threatening and should be ruled out before beginning any abortion procedure.a

Fetal Heartrate:

An ultrasound can visualize and measure fetal cardiac activity, assuring fetal viability. Almost one in four pregnancies will end in miscarriage, most of which happen during the first trimester. It is possible to have a positive pregnancy test for up to a month following a miscarriage.

Gestational Age:

An ultrasound will allow us to measure the gestational age to determine how far along you are and your estimated due date. Dating your pregnancy will help you decide which options are safely available to you if you are considering abortion.
