An ultrasound is a medical scan that uses sound waves to produce live images of the inside of your body. These scans are noninvasive and do not use any radiation, making them a safe way to view a growing fetus during pregnancy. Also known as sonography, ultrasounds are the most accurate way of determining if your pregnancy is still viable and how far along you are.
During an ultrasound, you can confirm the location of your pregnancy. You can now see if your pregnancy has implanted in the uterus or if you are experiencing an ectopic pregnancy where the fetus has implanted outside the uterus. Ectopic pregnancies can be fatal if they aren’t treated correctly and in a timely manner. If you experience severe pain, bleeding, or both at any point in your pregnancy, immediately go to the emergency room.
