What to Know About Medical Abortion

Dealing with an unplanned pregnancy can be hard. If you’re unsure what your options are, Alcove Health can help. Whether you’re contemplating abortion, adoption, or parenthood, we can provide you with objective information so you can make the most-informed decision for you.

There are two different types of abortion: surgical and medical. Medical abortion is also known as the abortion pill. However, it’s important to note that it’s actually a combination of two different medications – mifepristone and misoprostol – taken with a time gap of 24-48 hours. This type of abortion is an option for those who are up to 10 weeks pregnant. After 10 weeks, a medical abortion is no longer considered a safe choice and a surgical abortion would need to be considered instead.

Alcove Health is not an abortion clinic. We do not perform or refer for abortions. However, our team of Advocates and Registered Nurses is readily accessible to have judgment-free conversations with you about your options and address any questions you might have.

KNOW FOR SURE

Schedule Your FREE Ultrasound

An ultrasound exam plays an important role in your decision, whether it is abortion, adoption, or parenting, and provides you with the information you need to make an informed decision about your reproductive health.

Location of Pregnancy:

An ultrasound shows the inside of the uterus. A pregnancy may develop inside the uterus (called an “intrauterine pregnancy”) or outside the uterus (called an “ectopic pregnancy,” which can be life-threatening for the woman). Before any abortion procedure, an ultrasound is necessary to confirm that the pregnancy is intrauterine.

Fetal Heartrate:

An ultrasound can visualize and measure fetal cardiac activity, assuring fetal viability. Almost one in four pregnancies will end in miscarriage, most of which happen during the first trimester. It is possible to have a positive pregnancy test for up to a month following a miscarriage.

Gestational Age:

An ultrasound will allow us to measure the gestational age to determine how far along you are and your estimated due date. Dating your pregnancy will help you decide which options are safely available to you if you are considering abortion.
