Finding out that you’re pregnant is a life-changing moment. You may feel a mix of emotions; you may be scared, nervous, excited, or numb. After seeing that positive pregnancy test, your mind might immediately jump to an additional worry: how are you going to tell your family you’re pregnant?
It is often difficult to process all these emotions and know what to do next. If you are feeling this way and need someone to talk to before you tell your family you’re pregnant, Alcove Health Women’s Clinic offers that safe space for you to confirm the pregnancy, talk about what is going on with a trained client advocate, and discuss your options with a registered nurse. And all of this is 100% confidential and FREE.
Once you’re able to process how you feel, the next big step could be sharing this information with other people. It is a little easier to tell friends, but telling your parents may cause even more fear! Here are some steps to maybe help you navigate this important discussion.
1. “How do I feel?” Like I said before, if you’re struggling with even knowing what you’re feeling, you deserve the time to work that out! How do YOU feel about the pregnancy? What are YOUR hopes and concerns? Being aware of your emotions will help you go into this conversation with more confidence.
2. Right time, right place. It can be very helpful to find a quiet and private space where you can tell your family you’re pregnant without any distractions. If you have a complicated relationship with your parent, parents, or family member, you might want to choose a space where everyone feels safe and comfortable.
3. Plan the conversation. Sometimes it’s good to plan what you want to say before you actually tell your family you’re pregnant. Here are some suggestions:
4. Acknowledge how they react. Your family will probably need time to take the information in, just like you did. They might initially react with happiness or shock or concern. Their emotions are NOT yours to feel or manage. Only they are responsible for how they feel and react.
5. Make a plan. If you have decided to continue with the pregnancy, planning can help your family see that you are thinking about this journey. If you need help in making a plan, the advocates and nurses at Alcove are here for you throughout your pregnancy decision.
6. Boundaries. Not all family members will react well or be supportive. That’s ok. If their response is critical or overwhelming, you are not alone. We can help!
In addition to our advocacy services, here at Alcove Health we also provide lab-grade urine pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, and STI testing. These services provide accurate information about your body and your pregnancy. The information, especially the information a ultrasound provides, can be important to know when you’re preparing to tell your family you’re pregnant.
No matter how your parents or family react, remember this pregnancy is your journey. You have the right to continue with your pregnancy and you deserve support. Try to give everyone – including YOURSELF – the time needed to process this news. We would love to be with you during your pregnancy decision and journey and provide compassion, understanding, and resources as you enter this new chapter of your life.
We’re here for you, before and after you tell your family you’re pregnant. Call or click here to schedule your free and confidential appointment with Alcove Health. You got this!
