When Is the Best Time to Take a Pregnancy Test?

Waiting to find out if you’re pregnant can be stressful. You may be counting days, watching for symptoms, or wondering if it’s too early to take a test. If you’re feeling anxious during this time, know you’re not alone. Many women experience the very same mix of emotions. Understanding when to take a pregnancy test and how they work can help you feel more confident and prepared for whatever comes next.

The Best Time to Take a Pregnancy Test

Typically, the best time to take a pregnancy test is after you’ve missed your period. By this point, hCG levels are usually high enough to be detected in your body, which increases the likelihood of an accurate result. If using an at-home test, it’s recommended to take it earlier in the day when your urine is most concentrated.

If your cycle is irregular or you’re unsure of when your period is due, wait at least two weeks after having unprotected sex. This can improve the accuracy of your test results. Every body is different, so timing may vary—but testing after a missed period generally gives the most reliable answer.

Early Testing and Accuracy

When suspecting you’re pregnant, it’s normal to want results as soon as possible. However, testing too early can lead to confusion. If you test before your hCG levels have risen, the results may come back negative even if you are pregnant.

If you receive a negative test result but still believe you are expecting, it can help to wait a few more days to test again. This gives your body more time to produce hCG. Retesting after your missed period or about a week later can provide a clearer result.

What If Your Results Are Confusing?

Sometimes test results aren’t as clear as we’d like them to be. You may notice a faint line, feel unsure whether the test worked correctly, or experience mixed emotions about what the result means.

If your results seem unclear, taking another test in a few days’ time can help. For the most reliable results, consider getting a medical-grade pregnancy test and, if appropriate, an ultrasound. Visiting with a healthcare provider is the most accurate way to confirm whether you’re pregnant.

Support While You Figure Out Next Steps

Whether the results of your pregnancy test are positive, negative, or uncertain, you don’t have to figure out next steps on your own. Our trained advocates are here to listen, provide medically accurate information, and support you without pressure or judgment. No matter what you’re feeling right now, you deserve care, clarity, and time to decide what’s best for you.
