An ultrasound scan is a medical exam that uses high frequency sound waves to capture live images from within your body. Ultrasounds, also referred to as sonography, are a noninvasive, painless procedure that produces images of organs, soft tissues, blood vessels, and blood from inside your body. Since an ultrasound uses no radiation, it is the preferred method for viewing a developing fetus during pregnancy.
Sometimes, an internal ultrasound is necessary. To evaluate pregnancies under 12 weeks, the medical standard is a transvaginal ultrasound, which means the transducer is gently inserted into the vagina to view the uterus, fetal development, and ovaries.

An ultrasound exam plays an important role in your decision and provides you with the information you need to make an informed decision.
An ultrasound shows the inside of the uterus. A pregnancy may develop inside the uterus (called an “intrauterine pregnancy”) or outside the uterus (called an “ectopic pregnancy,” which can be life-threatening for the woman). Before any abortion procedure, an ultrasound is recommended to confirm that the pregnancy is intrauterine.
An ultrasound can visualize and measure fetal cardiac activity, assuring fetal viability. Almost one in four pregnancies will end in miscarriage, most of which happen during the first trimester. It is possible to have a positive pregnancy test for up to a month following a miscarriage.

Depending on the type of ultrasound you’ll receive – either transvaginal or transabdominal – you may need to empty your bladder prior to the scan. One of our nurses will inform you when you arrive.

If you are far enough along, yes. The accuracy of determining your baby’s gender increases with how far along you are in your pregnancy. Feel free to ask the nurse if she is able to tell!
