Pregnant and depressed?

what you need to know

Know the signs and get the help you need so you can start to feel better

Have you ever heard that pregnancy takes you on a roller coaster of emotions? Well, if you’re pregnant you may feel like that is the world’s greatest understatement. Not long after taking a pregnancy test, you may find yourself both pregnant and depressed.

You may even feel a little embarrassed about how you feel. But please believe that you have no reason to feel embarrassed about experiencing emotional turmoil during pregnancy.

For some women, pregnancy is the greatest roller coaster of all time! Some days you may not feel like you are not pregnant at all. You may be happy, excited, and feeling just fine. Other days, your hormones may cause you to feel like you can’t get a handle on your emotions. That’s normal.

But if you seem to be having more lows than highs or find that you are feeling more and more overwhelmed or sad, you need to first reach out to your provider because you may be experiencing depression.

If you think this sounds like you, here are some additional things you should know.

Know it’s not your fault. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, perinatal depression (depression during pregnancy or after childbirth) is not caused by anything you did or did not do, but is caused by a combination of things. If you’re pregnant and depressed, this combination can include physical, emotional, environmental, or circumstantial factors.

Know that you are not the only person who is pregnant and depressed. According to the Mayo clinic, studies have shown that about 7% of pregnant women experience depression at some point during their pregnancy.

The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommends pregnant women know what depression may look like and speak with their medical provider if they have been experiencing symptoms for 2 weeks. Click here for a list of symptoms they recommend pregnant women look out for.

Know there is help! You don’t have to work through it alone. If you’re pregnant and depressed, let us help you get connected to resources that can help you understand what you are feeling any why. And most importantly, get the help you need so you can start to feel better.

With so much attention focused on the physical changes you may experience, it’s really easy to forget that you may also experience emotional changes. We want to remind you that your emotional well-being is also very important.

This is especially true if you are facing an unplanned pregnancy. Maybe you aren’t even sure if you’re pregnant. Just thinking about it can make you feel emotionally overwhelmed. Here at Alcove Health Women’s Clinic, we’d like to help.

Give us a call to speak with someone about having your pregnancy confirmed. It won’t cost you anything and you’ll also be able to speak with a trained client advocate who can help you process your thoughts and feelings. But that’s not all, you can also meet with one of our Registered Nurses who can perform an ultrasound and answer your medical questions.
