You may be surprised to learn that many women who visit our clinic already have children. That’s right, they are already moms – good moms – and they’re trying to decide what to do with their current (unexpected) pregnancy. This may be you, too. You may be a mom and want an abortion, and an options consultation may be the perfect service to help you figure out your next steps.
You may be in a position you never thought you’d be in – a break-up, a divorce, a death, or an incarceration may have turned your once stable life upside down. Financial, emotional, and familial reasons may weigh especially heavy right now. Unplanned pregnancies have a way of highlighting all the “what-ifs” and “whys?” that we otherwise might push to the back of our minds. We’re women, after all. We’re strong.
But even for strong women, it’s unfortunate that the time most women make their abortion decision (during the first trimester) is also, for many women, the worst time in the pregnancy. Emotions are high, the shock of the pregnancy is new, and – if you’re like me – you’re just so tired and nauseated. How can you think clearly with all of this going on inside your body?
If you’re a mom and want an abortion, first remember that all the things mentioned above impact us. Even though many of them are temporary. We won’t be tired forever. Our hormones won’t be high forever (thankfully). But the decision we make is forever.
My challenge to you is to resist the urge to “just get it over with.” Instead, I want to encourage you to get all the information you need to make sure in the end – when your emotions settle down, the nausea passes, and you get your energy back – you’re still pleased with the decision you made.
If you’re a mom and want an abortion, you may actually be planning to get an abortion for your other kids. To put them first. To make sure you can focus on them. When you consider this decision, though, it’s important to remember that this “choice” is also their sibling. Creating more space for your other kids at the expense of one of their brothers or sisters may be a trade-off where they actually lose.
An abortion decision is a big decision.
We help moms all the time. And you know what? They’re thankful they took a moment to visit the clinic and get the medical and advocacy services they needed to make a wise decision. These decisions affect their mental, physical, and spiritual health. And, because you’re a good mom – these services help protect you for the child(ren) you already have. You and your family are worth it.
You may be thinking, “I’m a mom and want an abortion” – it’s clear-cut, what else do I need to know?
A lot. Did you know that 10-20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage? And most miscarriages occur in the first trimester. You can get a positive pregnancy test for a pregnancy that has already miscarried. Why would you put your body, your mind, and your wallet through an abortion on an already deceased baby? You know that doesn’t make sense.
But your health is worth even more, mama. An additional reason we provide ultrasounds here at Alcove Health is to detect ectopic pregnancies. Online abortion pills are available, but without getting an ultrasound first, you are taking a chance with your health.
You first need an ultrasound to diagnose an ectopic pregnancy because an undetected ectopic pregnancy can be life-threatening – for you. In fact, the manufacturer of the abortion pill warns against taking the pill with an ectopic pregnancy.
You’re a good mom, and that means protecting yourself, too.
Not just your physical health, but your mental health as well. It is not unusual for women to struggle emotionally after an abortion.
According to Mayo Clinic:
“After a medical abortion, you may have a mix of emotions, including relief, loss, sadness or guilt. If these feelings bother you, it might help to talk to a counselor about them.”
Your mental health is an important part of who you are as a woman and as a mother. It’s part of informed consent to understand how you will live in the after of an abortion.
We can help you get the services you need to make a decision that considers every part of you. If you’re a mom and want an abortion, call or click here to schedule your appointment today.
