Fetal development at 6 weeks

interesting facts to know

At Alcove Health, we provide ultrasounds so you can understand everything going on inside your body and get the information you need to plan your next step.

If you just got a positive pregnancy test, you may be wondering about fetal development, even if it’s really early in your pregnancy. The amount of growth and changes that occur with a pregnancy as early as 6 weeks is truly remarkable!

At 6 weeks (four weeks after conception) the embryo takes on some very distinct characteristics. Vital structures like the neural tube, the cardiac system, kidneys, eyes, ears, and the liver are all actively forming.

The neural tube runs along the backbone and develops into the brain and nervous system. If this tube does not close properly, significant birth defects can occur. All the complex parts of the brain and the intricate details of the nervous system are forming now and must align in particular order for proper function.

During the fifth week of fetal development, the heart cells form and begin to pulse (at just 21 days from conception) and should be visible by vaginal ultrasound at 6 weeks. The heart rate is usually about 110 beats per minute clearly showing the moving valves and electrical activity.

Different bone features are also developing – specifically all the limb buds and facial features. Cheek, chin, and jaw bones are taking shape, as well as the palate in the mouth. The ears, eyes, and nose are also beginning. The unique facial characteristics that we each possess was ascribed at this phase!

At six weeks, by ultrasound, the embryo can be measured from crown to rump. That is measured from the top of the head to the end of the tail (the tail bone). Shaped in a curvature, it is often described as the fetal position.

At Alcove Health, we offer ultrasound services so you can understand everything going on inside your body and get the information you need to plan your next step.

Understanding fetal development and some of the miraculous changes that occur in the first few weeks of life in utero can have a big impact on your pregnancy decision. It is not just a clump of cells.

There is order and purpose involved in every detail of fetal development. The life seen is evidenced by a beating heart and vital organ systems that become the most intricate and complex ever – it is truly mind blowing! And this is how we all started in our mother’s wombs.  Take the time to ponder this.

An unplanned pregnancy can quickly turn your world upside down. But understanding how a life can be impacted forever is worth taking the time to slow down and not make a rash decision.

Here at Alcove Health we take that time with you – considering all your pregnancy options, discussing your support needs, and providing you with valuable medical information, including information about fetal development.
