What is a birth plan

And why do you need one?

Having a baby can be unpredictable; a birth plan is a great way to make your preferences known

You’ve taken a pregnancy test, confirmed your pregnancy with an ultrasound, and chosen your doctor; it may be a good time to start thinking about a birth plan. You may be thinking, “What’s that?” It can be overwhelming to think about your birthing experience. To help easy worries, sometimes women choose to make birth plan.

A birth plan is a way to document your preferences for how you want your labor, delivery, and postpartum care to unfold. Some birth plans are very detailed, and some are more of a basic idea of what you’d like your birth experience to look like.

Here are a few things to consider when thinking about or constructing a birth plan.

Labor Preferences

Delivery Preferences

  • Who would you like to be in the room during labor and delivery?
  • Preferences for medical intervention.
  • What kind of delivery you would prefer?
  • Your plan to use relaxation techniques during labor and delivery.

Postpartum Care Preferences

Communication

    • How will medical information be communicated to you and others who may be with you?

Cultural or Religious Considerations

    • Are there any cultural or religious considerations you want to share with your physician as part of your birth plan?
    • Do you wish to incorporate any traditions into your birthing experience?

Emergency Situations

    • What are your instructions or preferences for communicating and managing any unexpected complications or situations during or after delivery?

A birth plan can be a helpful tool for you to communicate what you want your birthing experience to look like. What is important to consider is allowing yourself to be flexible if your birth plan does not work out the way you wanted. All birthing experiences are different so it may be a good idea to have a backup plan!
