Anxiety and Depression During Pregnancy: The Number 1 Things To Do Right Now - Alcove Health Women's Clinic Newport News, VA

Anxiety and Depression During Pregnancy: the Number 1 thing to do right now

Women not only struggle with postpartum anxiety and depression, but also anxiety and depression during pregnancy. Here’s what we don’t talk about enough.

So many women struggle with their mental health, and I have too. I know it’s not easy. It’s actually really hard sometimes. The hopelessness is heavy and crushing. The anxiety is sickening and debilitating.

If you’re struggling or have struggled in the past with your mental health, you may worry, “Will I have postpartum depression or postpartum anxiety?” But even before that, with the image of a positive pregnancy test fresh in your mind, you may wonder about anxiety/depression during pregnancy.

Well, I want you to know what that looks like and what ways you can seek support.

Depression During Pregnancy

We hear a lot about postpartum depression, but women may also experience prenatal depression – depression during pregnancy. Anyone can experience depression, but if you have a history of mental health or mood disorders, it could increase your risk of experiencing it.

Symptoms of prenatal depression are:

  • Anxiety
  • Low self-esteem
  • Lack of interest
  • Persistent sadness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Not sleeping enough or sleeping too much
  • Withdrawal from friends and family
  • Change in appetite, eating too much or not eating enough
  • Feeling guilt, worthlessness, hopelessness
  • Frequent crying
  • Low energy, fatigue
  • Thinking about death or suicide or self-harm. If this is you, please contact:

Anxiety During Pregnancy

It’s common to experience anxiety during pregnancy. Like prenatal depression, if you have a history with anxiety or mental health disorders, it could put you more at risk of experiencing anxiety during pregnancy.

Symptoms of anxiety during pregnancy include:

  • Constant worry
  • Restlessness
  • Feelings of dread
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Muscle tension
  • Irritability
  • Symptoms of panic disorder, OCD, or PTSD

Considering Abortion?

If you’ve considered abortion because of anxiety and depression during pregnancy, you’re not alone. Other women have struggled with the same thoughts. Many find it isolating because everyone focuses on postpartum depression and anxiety, but not anxiety and/or depression during pregnancy.

As much as we realize these emotions and feelings are temporary, it doesn’t make it any easier.

Your first step is to talk to your OBGYN about how you’re feeling and get treatment. You deserve to be in a healthy place before making a pregnancy decision like that.

I know seeking help can be hard. We may feel ignored or dismissed when we do try to advocate for ourselves OR we feel unworthy of help. I encourage you to try, even if it’s uncomfortable. I know you might not believe it, but you are worthy of care. Here’s what you can do:

  • Talk to your OBGYN
  • Seek professional counseling or therapy
  • Explore medication options safe for pregnancy
  • Seek support from friends and family – don’t be afraid to lean on them. These people love you and hate to see you struggling. They WANT to help.

Helping Someone Experiencing Anxiety/Depression During Pregnancy

Here are some ideas of ways you can support someone who is pregnant and struggling with their mental health:

  • Bring them a meal
  • Pick up something from the store they may need
  • Help clean up or with chores around the house
  • Provide pet care
  • Provide childcare or take the kids out for the day
  • Encourage them to talk to their OBGYN if they haven’t yet
