An unplanned pregnancy can be stressful for anyone, especially if you’re a teenager. You’re getting ready to make a huge decision. The first question on your mind after seeing that positive pregnancy test may be: “Can you get an abortion without telling your parents?
If you’re in Virginia and you’re under 18, the law states you need permission from at least one parent or legal guardian to get an abortion. That permission must be in writing and given to the doctor doing the procedure.
So, does that mean you can’t get an abortion without telling your parents? Not always. If you can’t tell your parents, or feel unsafe doing so, there’s another option called a judicial bypass.
To pursue a judicial bypass, you go to court and ask a judge (instead of your parents) for permission to get an abortion. You’ll need to show that you’re mature enough to make this decision on your own or that telling your parents wouldn’t be in your best interest. The judge has to decide within four days, and you don’t have to tell your parents you’re going to court.
Although here in Virginia you need someone’s consent if you’re a minor and want an abortion without telling your parents, that isn’t the case for an appointment at Alcove Health.
