An ectopic pregnancy can cause health risks. For example, if the pregnancy is in the fallopian tube, it can actually stretch the tube and cause it to rupture (burst). A ruptured fallopian tube requires emergency surgery. According to the National Library of Medicine, ectopic pregnancies are the leading cause of death during the first trimester of pregnancy.
