You might be pregnant: 8 Symptoms

Have you missed your period or just feel a “little off”? You might be pregnant. Here's how we can help.

Have you missed your period or just feel a “little off”? Pregnancy might be the first thing you think about, even though it might be the last thing you want to think about. Even before you take a pregnancy test, let’s talk about some symptoms that indicate you might be pregnant.

8 Symptoms

  1. Missed period – this is often the first thing that alerts a woman that she might be pregnant. However, some women do not have regular periods, and some can go months without one. So, missing or having a late period is not always a good indicator
  2. Breast tenderness – this one can be kind of tricky, as many women experience some breast tenderness right before the start of their period or during their period, so it could be a sign you might be pregnant; it could also be a sign you’re getting ready to start your period.
  3. Nausea – this can occur with or without vomiting. It is often referred to as morning sickness, but as many women can attest, it can happen anytime during the day or all day. Click here for some tips that may help ease some of your nausea if you think you might be pregnant. If you are unable to keep any fluids down, are feeling lightheaded or dizzy, or have lost 5 pounds or more, you should call your provider or have someone take you to the ED for evaluation.
  4. Fatigue – it is not known what causes fatigue, but it is thought to be due to the rapid rise in the level of the hormone progesterone during early pregnancy. I for one felt like I could have slept through the first 12 weeks.
  5. Frequent urination – During pregnancy, the amount of blood in the body increases which means that more fluid is being processed by the kidneys, which makes you feel like you are always in the bathroom.
  6. Bloating – this is not one I was familiar with, but it is one that is often reported when women tell me they think they might be pregnant. It feels like the bloating you may feel right before the start of your period.
  7. Food aversion – this is a sign you might be pregnant and can be confusing. A woman may feel like she is starving, order her favorite meal, and then when she smells it or takes one bite, she doesn’t want to even look at it anymore. From experience, this is not typically one that lasts the entire pregnancy, so don’t give up on your favorite food just yet.
  8. Cramping – this can occur throughout the pregnancy and feels different for each woman. In early pregnancy it is usually attributed to the growth of the uterus, which is stretching to accommodate the new pregnancy. Some women say this feels like period cramps in their lower abdomen and/or their back.
The key is to pay attention to the duration and intensity.  The cramping should come and go and is not usually stronger than period cramps. We typically say not worse than a 6 on a pain scale of 0-10. But of course, pain is subjective and everyone has a different pain tolerance.

When To Seek Medical Attention

If you’re having intense pain and bleeding, this could be a sign of a miscarriage and you should be evaluated by your OB/GYN. Another thing to pay close attention to is if you are only feeling the pain centered on one side of the abdomen or pelvis. This may be a sign of an ectopic/tubal pregnancy and requires immediate medical attention.
