Since the moment you took that pregnancy test, you feel pressured to have an abortion. This pressure can make you feel overwhelmed, confused, and alone. This can make facing an unplanned pregnancy even more difficult. And if your pregnancy was planned, but your boyfriend or partner has now changed his mind about wanting a baby, you may even feel betrayed and abandoned.
Maybe you’re not even sure of what you want. You may feel stuck and frozen by fear, and unsure of what to do next.
Here are some tips that may help if you’re feeling pressured to have an abortion:
1. If you haven’t already done so, you should have your pregnancy confirmed by a medical professional.
This is especially important if you have had both a positive and negative result on a home pregnancy test. And even more important if you have not taken a test yet. Missing your period alone does not automatically mean you’re pregnant. According to Flow.health, changes in your period can also be caused by the following…
We can help you know for sure. Here at Alcove Health Women’s Clinic, we provide no–cost pregnancy confirmation. We would love to help you with this first tip.
2. Know your rights.
You have the right to make an informed decision. This means you have the right to receive medically based information, learn about all your options, and ask any questions you may have. If you are pregnant, one of our Registered Nurses can perform an ultrasound (at no cost to you) that can tell you important information about the location, viability, and gestational age of your pregnancy. No one should make you feel so pressured to have an abortion that you don’t get the information you need to protect your reproductive health.
You should also know that your right to decide what to do about your pregnancy, WITHOUT pressure, coercion, or threats is protected by the law. You deserve a safe space to process your thoughts and feelings. Speaking with a trained Client Advocate can help you learn about ALL your options and help you understand your rights. If someone is making you feel pressured to have an abortion, you may feel like you don’t have any rights – but that’s not true.
3. It’s important to slow down and breathe.
You may be thinking it would be easier to just give in to the pressure. Maybe you are worried your boyfriend will be upset or may not stick around. Maybe you both need time and a safe space to talk through your fears and concerns. Communicating when we’re stressed, afraid, or feeling overwhelmed is hard. Deciding what to do about your pregnancy is one of the biggest choices of your life. You’re too important to make a rushed decision because you’re feeling pressured to have an abortion!
