“Are condoms effective?” The simple answer is yes. Although we know condoms are effective, though, you may still be wondering if you should get a pregnancy test or STI testing.
Statistically condoms are 98% effective at preventing pregnancy and STIs, when used properly. The only thing better at preventing both is abstinence.
The key phrase about the effectiveness of condoms is – when used properly.
Also, condoms are effective when you make him wear one. I know that is crazy but having them in the room or telling yourself he should wear one, does not do you any good, one of you must put it on him.
As women, we have all been there, that nagging voice that is telling you, even screaming at you, to be cautious. Then the other voice is saying, you don’t want to ruin the mood, inconvenience him, or feel awkward for telling him to use the condom. Seriously? Say that out loud. Do you hear yourself? Condoms are effective 98% of the time! How can you not insist on a condom?
If one of your girlfriends said she didn’t want to inconvenience some guy, you’d think she was crazy for putting some guy’s convenience over herself. Not to be rude, but please, do you think he is concerned about you or himself? If he doesn’t want to wear a condom, he must not be that hard up for it!
Based on what I see every day, you must be the one to take the necessary steps to “stay safe.”
How inconvenient will it be for you if you find out that you have an STI or that you are pregnant? Depending on the STI, you can get treatment, but what if you get pregnant? That is life-changing. There is no “treatment” for pregnancy and that is where things become significantly more complicated and that is where we want to step in and help.
Condoms are effective, most of the time. But, if you are one of the 2% for whom it is not effective, or if you are one of the women who is beating yourself up because you did not make him wear a condom and are now facing an unplanned pregnancy, you are NOT alone.
