Why Get the Ultrasound If I Know I Want an Abortion?

There are 3 pretty big reasons to get the ultrasound before an abortion

Virginia law no longer requires an ultrasound before performing an abortion. It’s important to understand, though, that making the abortion process faster doesn’t equal making it safer. An ultrasound may seem like an unnecessary step, but this simple scan provides information that’s critical to your health – and the only way to get this information is to get the ultrasound.

That’s Because an Ultrasound:

1) Confirms Pregnancy Location

An ultrasound shows the inside of your uterus. If your pregnancy isn’t located correctly inside the uterus, it’s ectopic and you need to go to the Emergency Department, not an abortion clinic. Any type of abortion is ineffective in these pregnancies and could delay necessary treatment to protect your health.

2) Determines Gestational Age

The gestational age (in weeks and days) of the pregnancy determines which abortion options are medically and legally appropriate. The RN measures the pregnancy during the ultrasound to give you an accurate estimate.

3) Assesses the Viability of the Pregnancy

Some pregnancies end on their own (a miscarriage), and you may not even realize it. If the pregnancy isn’t viable, you might need medical care, but not an abortion. An ultrasound helps confirm viability.

Key Points About Ultrasounds at Alcove Health:

  • Ultrasound Availability

Patients are assessed for ultrasounds when they arrive for their appointment; most get the ultrasound during their initial visit.

  • What to Expect

We start by performing an abdominal ultrasound, but often transition to a “transvaginal” ultrasound, for clearer imaging early in pregnancy. While it may sound intimidating, most patients say the anticipation is worse than the procedure itself.

  • Informed Care

Our nurse will talk you through every step before you get the ultrasound. She’ll also answer your questions so you’ll be informed and comfortable.

  • You don’t have to come alone!

You’re welcome to bring one adult guest with you for support. Your guest can also be with you when you get the ultrasound (with your consent, of course).

  • Confidential & Free Services

All services at Alcove Health are free, confidential, and provided with your consent.
