According to the National Alliance on Mental Health, “Both religion and spirituality can have a positive impact on mental health…(they) can help a person tolerate stress by generating peace, purpose and forgiveness.”
While religion and spirituality are similar, they are not identical. The difference actually plays a role in the ways that each one benefits an individual.
While both religion and spirituality incorporate a set of deeply held beliefs, religion is generally practiced in community while spirituality tends to be more individualistic, though they are not mutually exclusive.
Some of the benefits of religiosity that are cited by the NAMH are:
Regularly participating in a religious community can also provide practical and emotional support during times of crisis. And for those who want to grow, a community with a set of shared values and beliefs can offer a safe encouraging environment in which to do that.
While the benefits of the practice of religion tend to revolve around community, the benefits of spirituality focus more on individual practices that contribute to a general sense of well-being, encourage personal growth and self-reflection, and help an individual feel a greater sense of belonging in the world.
So, from all of the mental health benefits that religiosity and spirituality offer, it is not difficult to see how these would also lead to physical benefits. It’s not rocket science to figure out that abusing substances like alcohol or illicit drugs is bad for health, which means that the converse of that is also true: not abusing substances is good for your health. And besides that, who couldn’t use a little less stress and more rest?
Unfortunately, spirituality is an often-overlooked key component to a woman’s health. But a 2022 study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health, concludes: “Our findings indicate that attention to spirituality in serious illness and in health should be a vital part of future whole person-centered care…focusing on spirituality in health care means caring for the whole person…”
Researchers go so far as to say that responsible health care should include asking a patient about their spiritual health, while choosing to ignore it can leave a patient feeling disconnected.
This is why here at Alcove Health Women’s Clinic, we believe spirituality is so important.
It impacts both your physical and mental/emotional well-being. For that reason, we prefer to take a holistic approach to our clients – offering physical, emotional and spiritual support for those who desire it. Why? Because all of you matters – mind, body, and spirit.
