Items for Baby: What Do I Actually Need?

What items for baby do you actually need? Learn the essential items you need for baby, what you can skip, and where to get free baby supplies.

Preparing for a new baby can feel overwhelming, especially for first-time parents. Between social media, baby registries, and endless product recommendations, it can seem like you need dozens of specialized items before your baby arrives. As you shop for baby supplies, you may be wondering what you’ll actually need for baby.

The good news? Newborns actually need very little at first. Most baby products fall into one of three categories:

  • Essentials: Items needed for your baby’s health, safety, feeding, sleep, and daily care.
  • Nice-to-haves: Products that can make life easier but aren’t necessary.
  • Skip-it items: Products that are heavily marketed but often provide little value for most families.

By focusing on the basics, you can save money, reduce stress, and feel more confident as you prepare for your baby’s first year.

What are the essentials?

Sleep Items for Baby

  • Crib and mattress: A crib is a long-term sleep solution that your baby can use for years. A bassinet can be helpful during the newborn stage but is typically used only until your baby reaches the manufacturer’s weight or mobility limits. Make sure the crib meets safety standards: slats are no more than 2 3/8 inches (60 millimeters) apart to ensure your baby’s head can’t get stuck between them. Read more about infant safe sleeping tips here.
  • 2-3 fitted crib sheets
  • Mattress protector
  • Baby monitor (if baby sleeps in a separate room)

Feeding Items for Baby

  • Formula, bottles, and bottle brush (if formula feeding). Start with a few cans of different brands of formula as not all babies do well with the same formula. Check this blog for help with formula.
  • Breast pump, nursing bras, nipple cream, and nursing pads (if breastfeeding). Nipple cream can be a great way to reduce tenderness or dryness in your nipples and can help prevent cracking or bleeding as well. Use the balm from day one.

Diapering & Hygiene Items for Baby

  • Diapers of all sizes
  • Wipes
  • Diaper rash cream
  • Baby-safe shampoo/body wash and lotion
  • Washcloth and towel set
  • Infant bathtub

Clothing Items for Baby (TIP: for a suggested amount of clothes, click here)

  • Onesies
  • Sleepers/pajamas
  • Socks
  • Hats appropriate for the season
  • Bibs and burp cloths
  • Jacket/coat/snowsuit depending on the weather

Health & Safety Items for Baby

  • Rectal baby thermometer
  • Baby nail clippers
  • Baby first aid kit
  • Infant fever-reducing medicine (ask your pediatrician for specific doses). Fevers in the first weeks of a baby’s life can be very serious and may require medical attention.
  • Vaccines: The CDC recommends a schedule of childhood vaccines to help protect infants from serious illnesses while their immune systems are still developing. Talk with your pediatrician about recommended vaccines and any questions you may have before making healthcare decisions for your child.

Transportation Items for Baby

  • Rear-facing car seat
  • Stroller
  • Diaper bag

Items for After the First Few Weeks (or later)

  • Developmental toys – rattle, sensory toys, contrast book
  • Highchair

What are the nice-to-have products?

These are items that are potentially good to have. Each family is different in what they need for baby so only you can gauge if these products would be valuable for you.

  • Diaper changing pad
  • Feeding support pillow
  • Bottle drying rack (if formula feeding)
  • Wearable sleep sack – when baby grows out of the swaddling phase, a sleep sack can be the next go-to as it’s safer than a blanket but still provides comfort to your infant. Looking for more sleep tips? Check out this in-depth blog on infant and toddler sleep – it covers everything from safe sleep practices to common sleep challenges.
  • Pacifiers – some moms use them and others don’t
  • Sound machines
  • Diaper cady
  • Cool mist humidifier
  • Baby swing or play mat
  • Baby carrier
  • Rocking chair or glider

What baby products are unnecessary?

While some families find these products helpful, they aren’t considered essential baby items. If they’re not in your budget or don’t fit your lifestyle, you can feel comfortable skipping them.

  • Diaper cream applicator
  • Wipe warmer
  • Automatic formula dispenser
  • Bottle warmer
  • Baby food blender
  • Specialized bath accessories: spout cover, kneeling pad, bath thermometer
  • Diaper pail
  • Drawer organizers
  • Baby shoes
  • Crib bumpers and infant loungers
  • Multiple blankets or receiving blankets: 2-3 will do

How do I stay up to date about recalled baby items?

This is a big worry a lot of parents have. Before purchasing or using baby gear:

  • Register products with the manufacturer
  • Check recall notices regularly
  • Stop using recalled products immediately
  • Avoid using secondhand products that do not meet current safety standards

Additionally, you can view the American Academy of Pediatrics news for health alerts on popular baby products prior to adding to your registry.

How do I get free baby items?

Many families need extra support during pregnancy and after their baby arrives. Community organizations, diaper banks, parenting programs, and local nonprofits may be able to help with items you need for baby like diapers, wipes, formula, clothing, and other baby essentials.

At Alcove Health, we offer free online parenting classes for pregnant women covering topics such as breastfeeding, newborn care, infant development, and even toddler bonding and development. At the completion of these classes, you’ll qualify to receive a layette bundle containing baby essentials, as well as monthly diaper and wipe assistance for a limited time.

If your baby is already here and you’re struggling to afford diapers or wipes, contact us to learn about available assistance and referrals to other community resources. Call or click the button below to schedule an appointment for assistance.
