don't want more children

An unplanned pregnancy can be scary and overwhelming, especially if you don’t want more children.

You just discovered you’re pregnant. This wasn’t planned. You may be thinking, “I can’t go through the newborn phase again,” or “I was done having kids,” or maybe you’re even thinking, “I thought I couldn’t get pregnant again.” In your disbelief, you may be confused, scared, or angry. If you don’t want more children and you’re considering all your options (parenting, adoption, and abortion), an options consultation may be perfect for you.

Many, if not all, women plan their lives ahead of time. In my perfect timeline, I would be married by 25, have a total of two children delivered by the age of 30, and then enjoy my happy-filled home with one family dog.

Now, have we lived out our lives exactly how we planned? No; life doesn’t always go by our plans. Maybe you were married, but just recently went through a divorce. Maybe you had a happy home but are now homeless due to economic inflation. Maybe you had an unexpected pregnancy last year, had the baby, but now find yourself pregnant again.

An unplanned pregnancy can look like a lot of things. It can be scary and overwhelming, especially if you don’t want more children.

An options consultation will help you work through all of this. At Alcove Health, you’ll find a safe space to process your emotions, go over your options, and learn some important details about your pregnancy. If you’ve only taken an at-home pregnancy test and it was faint or positive, we can also provide a laboratory-grade pregnancy test to make sure your test got it right.

In 2023, we had 21 women who thought they were pregnant either by symptoms or inconclusive or positive pregnancy tests, but the verification test provided by Alcove Health was negative and they were not pregnant. You too could have an inaccurate at-home pregnancy test. If you don’t want more children, this would probably be a relief for you.

If your verification test is positive, your trained patient advocate will be there for you to process your feelings about this pregnancy and discuss your pregnancy options. She can also refer you to community partners for resources like food, low-cost medical care, and maternity homes or government programs like Medicaid or WIC. This will be especially helpful if the reason you don’t want more children is because of the lack of support or resources.

Then, our registered nurse will evaluate you for an ultrasound. Did you know that ultrasounds can determine if a pregnancy is outside the uterus (ectopic), detect a possible miscarriage, and take measurements to see how far along you are? Our registered nurses are also trained in giving abortion education, especially if you are considering your first abortion.

Regardless of the reason why you don’t want more children, Alcove Health is here as the first call for pregnant women to make sure you get free and accurate medical care. Call or click here to schedule your safe, free, and confidential appointment today.
