Making a decision in the midst of a difficult circumstance can be challenging. Looking at a positive pregnancy test can send you into crisis mode; so then, how do you wisely make a decision about an unplanned pregnancy?
Evaluating several alternatives and choosing the one most likely to achieve your goals requires the brain to slow down and integrate information. Thinking clearly and rationally, with minimal emotion, can require some time and hopefully some good counsel.
Including a professional’s opinion can be helpful as you sort through information from a variety of resources to form an evaluation for yourself. All of this includes your personal beliefs, morals, past decisions, biases and connections.
Making a decision about an unplanned pregnancy can feel like an overwhelming situation; but there are some things you can do to make a decision that’s right for you, even in the middle of such high stress.
Our brain was designed to protect us from harm or danger–and in these situations our brain kicks in some intense hormones and triggers an involuntary response. The “Fight or Flight” mode takes over causing our heart rate to increase, extra energy to be released to engage muscles, and the bronchial tubes to relax amd allow more oxygen into the bloodstream. These are all examples of how our body responds to a stressor.
Sometimes the actual stress response is more dangerous than the stressor itself. So, the ability to slow down and think rationally takes some intentionality. Research shows that long term decisions made in the “Fight or Flight” mode can be rash, misleading, and full of regret. That’s not a good combination when you’re trying to make a decision about an unplanned pregnancy.
