Help, She's Pregnant - Alcove Health Women's Clinic Newport News, VA

help - she's pregnant!

Often, men assume that because she’s pregnant, she must understand all her options. That’s not necessarily true...

“I’m pregnant” – these two words can stop you in your tracks. Especially if the pregnancy wasn’t part of the plan.

A surprising test result and the urgent need to make a decision can be overwhelming. If you just found out she’s pregnant, this is the perfect time to make an appointment for an options consultation and medical services. These services can help both of you.

Men Are Included at Alcove Health

Here at Alcove Health Women’s Clinic (yes, we’re a women’s clinic), we include men, too.

Why? Because there is always a man involved in a pregnancy. We understand that legally the decision to carry the pregnancy or abort the pregnancy is solely the woman’s.

Even so, women don’t usually make their pregnancy decisions alone — they often make them with someone they trust. You may be that person for her.

You’re Both Processing

A lot of thoughts have probably been running through your mind since you found out she’s pregnant.

Sometimes when stress is high, it’s hard to have a conversation where you listen well and you are heard well. But it’s not impossible. And the decision about what to do with a pregnancy is one of the weightiest, so it’s worth the effort to understand each other.

You may already agree on the next step, or you may not. You may have earlier agreed, together, that she’d have an abortion if she accidentally got pregnant.

But the decision you made then may hit differently now that the pregnancy is real — much more than just an idea with talking points. All your earlier certainties may now feel uncertain. For both of you.

Your Feelings Are valid

Know that you have the right to your feelings. The law allows her to decide to abort without your consent; however, the law doesn’t – it can’t – require you to feel a certain way about that decision.

Understand that your feelings are valid, and so are hers.

She has a lot going on inside her head and heart, too. Her shock that she’s pregnant may be just as big as your shock that she’s pregnant.

Her feelings may be rooted in fear and uncertainty about her future — and maybe even uncertainty about you.

Her mind may be flooded with questions:

  • Is he going to stay if I decide to abort (or carry)?
  • Will he help me parent?
  • If he doesn’t stick around, will I be able to make it on my own?

She may not even be voicing these questions, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t thinking about them.

What She Wants to Know

Of all the questions, though, the one I hear most often from women is:

“How does he really feel about all of this?”

Through all my years walking alongside women facing unplanned pregnancies, this is the question she ponders most — because it’s the question she most often can’t answer.

And herein is the biggest dilemma:
She has feelings. You have feelings. But you may not be communicating them clearly with one another.

Get Information. Be Honest.

So, my one recommendation to any man in this position:
Get all the information you need (with her) to understand all the options.

Then, if she asks you what you think, tell her.

So often, “your body, your choice” is an engrained response. So much that, even when she asks for honest input, men often don’t feel like they have the freedom to be honest.

That’s why the most common statement we hear from men is:

“I’ll support her no matter what.”

You may have said this yourself — and you probably thought it was a noble response. But, while it sounds supportive, many women say it feels different.

This response makes her feel like all the pressure is on her to decide, alone.

Yes, she’s pregnant, and you may be physically there with her, but your silence – even if you are saying “supportive statements” – carries a weight of its own.

Your silence likely feels like loneliness to her.

What You Can Do

We’re here to help with that. Ask her if she’d like an appointment with us here at Alcove Health, and then offer to come with her. Be willing to be involved. Hear what she hears. Ask questions together. The “after” of your relationship may pivot on this one decision – and your honesty about your feelings.

Don’t assume you know all you need to know. Likely, you don’t.

And pressuring her to do something you don’t fully understand may get the immediate result you want, but the repercussions may be far heavier than you are even imagining.

You can handle the truth; so can she. Especially if you work through this together.

It’s a Lot – For Both of You

Often, men assume that because she’s pregnant, she must understand all her options well. That’s not necessarily true, either.

Most of us don’t think about unplanned pregnancies until we’re looking at a positive test wondering what we’re going to do next.

It’s a lot, isn’t it? For men and women.
