I’ve heard it at least a hundred times. Even after our nurse has confirmed the pregnancy with a laboratory-grade pregnancy test, our clients will often say, “I didn’t think I could get pregnant!” It can be pretty scary and overwhelming to find out you’re pregnant, especially if you really didn’t think it was even a possibility.
There are many reasons women think they can’t or won’t get pregnant. The truth is, if you’re having sex, then there IS a possibility you might get pregnant.
“But I didn’t think I could get pregnant because I have PCOS” (polycystic ovarian syndrome).” PCOS is a common disorder that affects women’s fertility. However, recent studies have shown that it may be over-diagnosed. I have had so many clients come in stating they’ve been diagnosed with PCOS but have had multiple children. As you can imagine, women are pretty shocked to find out they’re pregnant again and don’t know what to do.
“But I didn’t think I could get pregnant because it hasn’t happened in a long time.” Some clients become pregnant several years after their last child and just assume that they can’t get pregnant. However, diet, exercise, medications, exposure to certain chemicals, and weight changes can all affect a woman’s ability to get pregnant.
“But I didn’t think I could get pregnant because I was on my period!” But you definitely can. One study found that only 30% of women have a clear and predictable time when they can conceive. This means that 70% of women don’t, and their fertile period might coincide with their menstrual cycle.
