Can I Get Another Abortion? - Alcove Health Women's Clinic Newport News, Hampton, Chesterfield, VA

Can I get another abortion?

You may have thought you’d never be here again, but a positive pregnancy test has a way of turning everything upside down.

You may have thought you’d never be here again. But a positive pregnancy test has a way of quickly turning everything upside down and, despite your earlier intentions, you may now be wondering if another abortion is the best decision for you.

Likely, your biggest concern isn’t about legalities or logistics. It’s probably something far more personal, like “Will having another abortion hurt me?”

It’s a question worth taking the time to think through, especially when it comes to how another abortion could affect you physically, emotionally, spiritually, and in your relationship.

1) If I get another abortion, will it hurt me physically?

While physical complications are noted as rare, they aren’t nonexistent. Some studies have found that a surgical abortion may raise the risk of future premature birth, miscarriage or low birth weight.

A history of three or more surgical abortions may increase the risk of Asherman’s Syndrome, a syndrome characterized by scar tissue forming inside the uterus. Asherman’s syndrome can cause pelvic pain, irregular periods, and infertility.

Medical abortions carry risks, too. Danco, the manufacturer of the abortion pill, notes:

“Serious and sometimes fatal infections and bleeding occur very rarely following spontaneous, surgical, and medical abortions, including following MIFEPREX use.”

Physical complications of abortion can include:

  • part of the pregnancy remaining inside the uterus (requiring additional treatment or surgery)
  • heavy bleeding
  • damage to the uterus
  • infection, including sepsis

Untreated infections could lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID can increase the risk of infertility or ectopic pregnancy.

Each individual abortion carries some risk.

A word of caution: If you’ve had an abortion recently, make sure this “new pregnancy” isn’t the pregnancy (or part of the pregnancy) you thought you recently aborted. It is important to rule this out, especially if you did not have a follow-up after a recent medical abortion.

2) If I get another abortion, will it hurt me emotionally or mentally?

Physical complications are often obvious and require outside medical interventions, but emotional complications are often something we struggle with in the privacy of our own minds.

Talking about things that hurt us emotionally – especially things so deeply personal – requires a vulnerability that can feel painful and risky. Sometimes silence seem like the safer choice. But staying silent doesn’t mean you’re not hurting from a past abortion; it may just mean you’re hurting in silence. And hurt is hurt whether it’s loud or quiet.

We see this in the clinic as women can recount all of their abortion stories – specifically. They don’t often lump them all together as one big abortion story, but as a series of abortion stories, each with its own hurt.

Perhaps right now, it feels like the easiest thing to do is to just get another abortion and deal with all these feelings afterward.

But you – and your future self – deserve actions today that will result in the the best version of yourself. And you alone know your honest thoughts and feelings about your previous abortion(s).

If slowing down to discuss your feelings seems like a speed bump on a path that will inevitably end in abortion, consider this question: Aren’t your thoughts and feelings worth exploring?

Your mental and emotional health deserve a safe place to talk about the thoughts and feelings you’ve been handling on your own. Safely. Without judgment or fear. Alcove Health Women’s Clinic is here to give you all the space you need to understand your options, process your feelings, and figure out your next step.

It’s not unusual for relief to be a common feeling right after an abortion. At the time, abortion ended whatever problem the pregnancy created in your life. But time sometimes has a way of bringing different feelings after an abortion, like: guilt, anxiety, anger, shame, regret of even suicidal thoughts.

If you’re struggling with the emotional impact of a previous abortion, now is the time to allow yourself the space to respect your feelings, slow down, and seek clarity before moving forward with another abortion.

3) If I get another abortion, will it hurt me spiritually?

If you’re wondering how another abortion will affect you spiritually, first ask yourself a few questions about your spiritual beliefs:

  • Does God create life?
  • Does God create life with purpose?
  • Does what God is doing in creation impact the way I view creation?

After an abortion, some women find that their beliefs collide with their realities.

“I just don’t think about it,” women sometimes say. While that’s a coping strategy, it’s not a thriving strategy. Your life deserves more than a choice to just survive.

Some women have no spiritual beliefs and this question seems like an easy one to pass over. But here’s the thing – if you’re even asking this question, the answer matters to you.

For those who have personal spiritual beliefs, these beliefs are perhaps the ones that define us most of all. The best question to ask yourself is “How can I make a decision that aligns with who I am?”

Here is something important to remember. Sometimes a woman has her first abortion even though it goes against her spiritual beliefs. Moving forward, she then starts to think of herself as the “woman who gets an abortion.” Abortion becomes wrapped up in her identity and she starts to think she can’t possibly retreat to safe ground spiritually for a future pregnancy. But that isn’t true.

You aren’t stuck in a loop with abortion on repeat. You have all the power in your hands to make your next decision. In the Bible, God repeatedly calls people to “turn” – you have a chance with this pregnancy to make a different choice for your future.

4) If I get another abortion, will it hurt me relationally?

Often, the relationship isn’t just a side issue regarding the abortion; it’s at the very core of the decision.

He may want the abortion while she doesn’t – or vice versa. Either way, the result is the same: there’s a conflict and the stakes are high.

A few things to note relationally:

  • Compromise is an important part of every relationship, but an abortion decision is an all-or-nothing decision. There is no space for both to compromise and create a middle ground 3rd option. Ultimately, you will either have an abortion or you won’t.
  • It is legal for the woman to make the abortion decision without any input from anyone else, including the father of the baby.
  • In the United States, it is illegal for anyone to coerce you into having an abortion. It’s also just wrong. If you feel like the decision to get an abortion is based solely on his needs and wants, this is the exact right reason to pause.
  • Often, men silently stand behind the “her body, her choice” banner. Silence on both ends can be very confusing. Don’t assume you know what he is thinking and don’t assume he understands your unspoken thoughts.
  • Sometimes women get an abortion in hopes of saving the relationship by protecting his dreams. After the abortion is complete, this often leads to resentment – especially if the abortion decision was made for him.
  • If your past abortion decision was made to protect his wants, here’s a question for you to consider: When will it be the time for you to protect your wants, your dreams, and your values?

If you’d like a safe space to work through the pregnancy together, we provide options consultations here at Alcove Health Women’s Clinic. You are welcome to bring him as your guest.
