The most surprising part of an unplanned pregnancy may not be the shock of the positive pregnancy test, but what comes after: your wife wants an abortion, and you realize you’re not sure.
As a man, the law is clear: the woman alone has the right to make the abortion decision within the laws of her state.
Even so, after consulting with hundreds of pregnant women over the years, I can say that the majority of women I’ve seen want their partners included in the process of making their pregnancy decisions.
If your wife wants an abortion, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t want your input.
There are three important aspects to working through a decision together:
Your disagreement may seem like the biggest thing right now. Especially if your wife wants an abortion but you don’t. But the “What are we going to do?” question isn’t really the first question to ask. There are several other questions to ask first.
Why first? Because each of these answers impacts your next decision. These answers may show you that, even if your wife wants an abortion, you don’t even have a “pregnancy decision” to make.
There are three questions you need to answer about the pregnancy, first:
That’s easy, one medical procedure will answer all three questions: an ultrasound. And here at Alcove Health Women’s Clinic in Newport News, VA, all our ultrasounds are provided at no-cost.
That’s right, an ultrasound will determine the location, age, and viability of the pregnancy, for free.
🧠Key Point: Making a pregnancy decision without these answers first is making a decision – an important one – without key information. Getting an abortion without an ultrasound could also put your wife’s health in danger.
In addition to an ultrasound, an appointment here at Alcove Health includes an options consultation. This gives your wife the space to:
Often, when couples are making a pregnancy decision, they aren’t communicating aloud. They are having plenty of conversations in their own minds, but not with one another.
Assuming another’s thoughts or intentions – in silence – can be dangerous to the future of the relationship. These conversations are difficult, but they’re important for the health of your future relationship.
So, rather than move forward in silence, encourage your wife to schedule an appointment with Alcove Health so you can both get the information and answers you need to protect her health and the health of your relationship.
It’s easy, she can call or visit our appointment page at the button below.
