My Wife Wants an Abortion - But I’m Hesitant - Alcove Health Women's Clinic Newport News, VA

My Wife Wants an Abortion - But I’m Hesitant

If your wife wants an abortion and you don’t, a free ultrasound is the first step to protect her health and make an informed decision together.

The most surprising part of an unplanned pregnancy may not be the shock of the positive pregnancy test, but what comes after: your wife wants an abortion, and you realize you’re not sure.

As a man, the law is clear: the woman alone has the right to make the abortion decision within the laws of her state.

Even so, after consulting with hundreds of pregnant women over the years, I can say that the majority of women I’ve seen want their partners included in the process of making their pregnancy decisions.

If your wife wants an abortion, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t want your input.

How Do We Move Forward Together With an Unplanned Pregnancy?

There are three important aspects to working through a decision together:

  • Open conversations – so you both get a chance to be the speaker and the listener.
  • Accurate information – so your open conversations are based on correct information.
  • An unrushed space – so you can figure it out and make a decision you both can live with

But What About If We Don’t Agree?

Your disagreement may seem like the biggest thing right now. Especially if your wife wants an abortion but you don’t. But the “What are we going to do?” question isn’t really the first question to ask. There are several other questions to ask first.

Why first? Because each of these answers impacts your next decision. These answers may show you that, even if your wife wants an abortion, you don’t even have a “pregnancy decision” to make.

What Is This Pregnancy?

There are three questions you need to answer about the pregnancy, first:

  1. Where is the pregnancy located? A pregnancy that isn’t intrauterine (inside the uterus) is ectopic. Ectopic pregnancies are life-threatening and require emergency treatment. Neither the abortion pill nor a surgical abortion will treat an ectopic pregnancy.
  2. How far along is the pregnancy? Your wife may have a pretty good idea about the age of the pregnancy based on tracking her period, but the accurate age of the pregnancy (in weeks and days) is important in determining which abortion procedures are available for this pregnancy.
  3. Is the pregnancy viable? Your wife can get a positive pregnancy test even if she is having a miscarriage. An abortion on a non-viable pregnancy, especially if your wife wants an abortion and you don’t, would put an unnecessary disagreement between you. A miscarried pregnancy isn’t an abortion.

So How Do You Answer These 3 Questions?

That’s easy, one medical procedure will answer all three questions: an ultrasound. And here at Alcove Health Women’s Clinic in Newport News, VA, all our ultrasounds are provided at no-cost.

That’s right, an ultrasound will determine the location, age, and viability of the pregnancy, for free.

🧠Key Point: Making a pregnancy decision without these answers first is making a decision – an important one – without key information. Getting an abortion without an ultrasound could also put your wife’s health in danger.

How Does An Appointment With Alcove Health Help You Resolve Your Concerns?

In addition to an ultrasound, an appointment here at Alcove Health includes an options consultationThis gives your wife the space to:

  • process her pregnancy and understand all her options
  • include a guest with her (this could be you if she consents)
  • ask questions and process the pregnancy decision

What Should You Not Do?

Often, when couples are making a pregnancy decision, they aren’t communicating aloud. They are having plenty of conversations in their own minds, but not with one another.

Assuming another’s thoughts or intentions – in silence – can be dangerous to the future of the relationship. These conversations are difficult, but they’re important for the health of your future relationship.

So, rather than move forward in silence, encourage your wife to schedule an appointment with Alcove Health so you can both get the information and answers you need to protect her health and the health of your relationship.
