When a woman discovers that she is pregnant, usually her first sign of pregnancy is her missed period. A woman who has regular, normal menstrual cycles is usually around 4 weeks pregnant when she takes a pregnancy test and gets a positive result. Looking at the positive pregnancy test, she’s likely not even thinking that she may have a chemical pregnancy.
So, what is a chemical pregnancy? A chemical pregnancy (or biochemical pregnancy) is a very early miscarriage that happens within the first five weeks of pregnancy before the pregnancy can be seen on an ultrasound. The best first indicator that you are pregnant is a positive pregnancy test; taking a urine pregnancy test is the easiest way to test.
Now for those facing an unplanned pregnancy, this may be difficult to navigate. So many emotions and feelings. Decisions need to be made. But, because a chemical pregnancy happens very early on in a pregnancy, it would be too early to detect on an ultrasound. So, how do you figure out your next step – how can you know if you have a chemical pregnancy?
There are some signs and symptoms of a chemical pregnancy:

Sometimes it can be very confusing and make you wonder, “Am I pregnant or not?” It is important to get a urine pregnancy test as soon as you miss your period. Then, if it is positive at home you should discuss it with a medical professional so you can have an FDA approved laboratory grade pregnancy test done. The results can be read by an RN.
Depending on your symptoms and on the results of the test, you can further discuss what has happened if it is truly a chemical pregnancy.
Chemical pregnancies are very common. About 25% of all pregnancies end in the first 20 weeks. And about 80% of those miscarriages happen early. Sometimes women don’t even know that they have had a chemical pregnancy. Chemical pregnancy is not preventable and is more common in women:
Pregnancy is a gift, not a given. Although chemical pregnancies are common, if detected and diagnosed the women may still become pregnant again in the future.
