Vaping vs Smoking in Pregnancy - Alcove Health Women's Clinic Newport News, VA

Vaping vs smoking in pregnancy

It's well known that cigarette smoking in pregnancy can harm women and their babies, but what about vaping?

If you recently had a positive pregnancy test, you may think vaping in pregnancy is safer than smoking in pregnancy. However, despite vaping being marketed as a safer and healthier smoking alternative for the user, vaping and smoking have been found to cause similar effects on lung function and cardiovascular function

Nicotine is the primary agent in both regular cigarettes and e-cigarettes. Nicotine is a health danger for a pregnant woman and her fetus, causing damage to the developing brain and lungs. It’s well known that cigarette smoking in pregnancy can harm women and their babies.

While e-cigarettes might expose a growing baby to fewer toxins compared with those from regular cigarette use, nicotine exposure of any kind is harmful to a baby.

When you’re pregnant, everything you put in your body can affect your pregnancy. If you smoke or vape, your fetus is exposed to nicotine.

This exposure to nicotine due to vaping or smoking in pregnancy increases the chance of:

  • Placenta problems. The placenta is an organ that gives the fetus oxygen and nutrients and gets rid of waste.
  • Preterm birth. The baby is born too soon.
  • Miscarriage or stillbirth.
  • Birth defects, such as a cleft lip.
  • Death early in life, mainly because of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
  • A baby with low birth weight

Experts recommend avoiding both vaping and smoking in pregnancy.

Quitting nicotine can be hard, but it can help protect you and your baby from health problems. Quitting early or before pregnancy is best, but it’s never too late to quit smoking.

If you can’t quit, cut back as much as you can. Talk with your OBGYN about ways they can help you overcome this habit.

Here at Alcove Health Women’s Clinic, we have local physician referrals to help you find an OBGYN doctor. You’ll also have a chance to speak with an advocate and a Registered Nurse about your pregnancy needs and what community resources are available.
