We hope you never find yourself in this situation. A sexual assault is a traumatic event and a crime—it affects you physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. This is a crime of power and it is not your fault; your rights have been violated and abused. You should consider reporting your attack to the police. Part of the process will likely involve a sexual assault medical exam.
During this vulnerable time, it is important to be with people whom you can trust to look out for your best interests in all ways. As the victim, you should be believed and protected.
Finding a healthcare facility that performs the sexual assault medical exam you need and can provide you with an advocate to walk you through the next several steps is of primary importance. Call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 800-656-HOPE – they are specially trained for support and will direct you to the nearest facility. Sexual assault medical exams are offered at no cost to you. The ideal timing is within 72 hours of the assault so that any evidence can be collected for analysis.
A Sexual Assault Medical Exam, also known as a Rape Kit, involves several steps – but all of them are under your control. You may stop, pause, or skip a step at any time, and you may have a companion of your choice by your side throughout. Your consent should always be sought first, and you may decline at any time.
Here’s what you can expect during the sexual assault medical exam:
Allowing time to process all your options is important before any major decisions are made. By getting a sexual assault medical exam and preserving possible DNA evidence, you have the chance to safely store evidence should you decide to report at any time.
Not only does DNA evidence carry weight in court, but it may also prevent future sexual assaults from occurring. Also, you may have injuries and trauma related to the assault that aren’t immediately visible.
You have been violated – and you may be tempted to run from it, to deny it, to bury it, to keep yourself busy, to escape it, or to numb yourself. Fear, hatred, bitterness, and inability to trust anyone are some ways it could manifest itself. Do not allow your initial reactions to your attack to “rule over” you in the long term.
You don’t have to face this heartbreak alone. Seek out people who can help you be more than a survivor. And allow yourself the grace of time to heal.
A sexual assault is more than a physical attack; it can affect you mentally, relationally, emotionally, and spiritually. You are a whole person; your whole person needs healing.
