The lines on the positive pregnancy test tell you something. But what exactly? Do they confirm that the pregnancy is viable? Do they indicate that the pregnancy isn’t ectopic? Well, no to both of those questions. The positive pregnancy test is the best first indicator that you’re pregnant, but you can get a positive pregnancy test with a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy.
Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG)
The over the counter pregnancy test detects the presence of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine. This hormone is released when the pregnancy implants in the uterus. HCG levels continue to rise until about 10 weeks in pregnancy and then gradually fall until childbirth.
A urine-based test cannot determine the level of hCG in your urine, it only detects whether or not hCG is present.
hCG Levels During A Miscarriage
When a miscarriage happens, the body stops producing hCG. Levels begin to drop, but the timeline varies. Several factors affect how long hCG levels stay elevated, including how far along you are in the pregnancy when the miscarriage occurs and the type of pregnancy. Regardless of the reason, it means you could get a positive pregnancy test with a miscarriage.
In fact, you could still get a positive pregnancy test with a miscarriage – up to several weeks after the miscarriage! It takes time for the levels to return to normal.
A pregnancy test can’t identify a miscarriage. The only time a home pregnancy test result could suggest a miscarriage is if you get a negative test result for a pregnancy test after several pregnancy tests that were positive.
Miscarriage Symptoms
Symptoms of a miscarriage can include:
If you are experiencing these symptoms and want to know for sure, visit your health care provider. You will likely need a blood test, pelvic exam, and an ultrasound. If you are experiencing active bleeding, go to the Emergency Department.
Unplanned Pregnancy
Since you can have a positive pregnancy test with a miscarriage, it’s crucial to verify the viability of your pregnancy if you’re considering a termination decision. Even with no miscarriage symptoms, you need more information to make a fully informed decision about your next steps.
Here at Alcove Health Women’s Clinic, we provide the services and advocacy you need to understand what’s going on inside your body before beginning any abortion procedure. We provide lab-grade urine pregnancy tests and ultrasounds to those who qualify.
Ultrasounds can determine the presence of a fetal heartbeat, or the lack of a heartbeat. Getting this information first will inform your next steps.
During your appointment, we provide the space to discuss your pregnancy options, answer your questions, and recommend urgent next steps if the ultrasound identifies the need for immediate care.
Your confidential appointment allows time for our RNs to listen to your concerns and evaluate your symptoms. We care about your reproductive health and provide all of our services with confidentiality and at no-cost.
