Support for Single parents

Local programs offer support for single parents all year long

Did you know that March 21st was National Single Parents Day? Yes! A national day to celebrate the amazing single parents who are out here rocking parenting despite the challenges. No need to look up to made-up heroes in movies, television shows, or video games.  Superheroes exist right in our own families, homes, and communities.

At Alcove Health Women’s Clinic, we see heroes like this every day. It’s so great to know that we are not the only ones. So, who do we thank for this great idea? Who finally decided to recognize the millions of moms and dads who get up every morning, put on their capes, and transform into whatever hero their child needs to feel loved and protected?

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5166 which designated March 21st as a day to acknowledge and celebrate single parents. Here’s why:

  • In 1984, records showed that almost half of all US children, under the age of 18, lived part of their life with one parent.
  • In 2022, just in the United States, there were almost 16 million children living with a single mother and about 4 million living with a single father.

These highlight the number of parents who deserve the best support and recognition we can give. Here at Alcove Health, we work hard to make sure our moms are connected to local agencies and organizations that provide information and resources to support them. We’re grateful to be in Newport News, VA, where we celebrate and support single parents all year long.

Several local programs have been created to make sure single parents are given the tools and resources they need. Some of the programs offer FREE PLAYGROUPS. There are also agencies that assist with CLOTHING, DIAPERS, and FOOD. Some organizations may even offer a free or low-cost family movie night or a parent’s night out. Others offer TRAININGS for parents to understand and learn new skills to help their child through each stage of development. Having access to local community resources means single parents can receive support that makes them feel honored and celebrated every day of the year.

Looking for ways to support local parents? Here are some ideas from The Baby Cubby to help you celebrate single parents, too:

  1. Write a note or letter. A personal note saying how you appreciate or admire the parent could mean more than you know.
  2. Take the parent to lunch. You can also give them a gift card so they can have lunch, on their own, without worrying about the cost.
  3. Help the child plan a surprise. Children can create artwork, help with chores, or make a simple dessert (with a little help).
  4. Notice single parents the other 364 days. When you really look at it, one day is just not enough.

There are tons of successful single parents who are meeting the challenges and beating the odds. Whether they are doing it alone by choice or due to situations that are out of their control, they are doing it. They are more important than any music, movie, sports, or video game hero their child will ever see. They are running the race and crossing the finish line every day. No cape needed! These parents are providing needs and protecting their child from danger. This is what we celebrate. This is why we honor them.
