Most women know that nausea and vomiting are common symptoms of pregnancy during the first 12 weeks (also known as the first trimester). However, some women deal with a more serious condition known as hyperemesis gravidarum (HG); which is defined as “severe and persistent nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.” In fact, the symptoms of hyperemesis gravidarum may be the very reason some women take a pregnancy test in the first place!
HG typically resolves after the first trimester but can last throughout the pregnancy. The exact cause is not known, but it is thought to be due to a rapid increase in the amount of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and estrogen in the woman’s body. According to medical experts, if you are pregnant, you might have hyperemesis gravidarum if you vomit:
There are more signs and symptoms of hyperemesis gravidarum, but these are the most common/obvious. The good news is that this condition is treatable. If you think you may have this condition, you should talk to your OB/GYN to determine which treatment options are right for you.
If you are experiencing nausea and vomiting (whether the “normal” symptoms associated with early pregnancy or a more extreme case like hyperemesis gravidarum) there are some things you can do to try and diminish your symptoms or to hold you over until you are able to see your provider:
Additionally, preventive measures may include the use of pressure-point wristbands and/or taking Vitamin B6.
If you become lightheaded, dizzy, or feel generalized weakness it is best that you either call 911 or have someone drive you to the ER for evaluation; you should not drive in this condition. You may need to be treated with IV hydration or medications to prevent nausea and vomiting. In severe cases of hyperemesis gravidarum you may need more intensive treatments or hospitalization.
As previously stated, many women deal with nausea and vomiting during their first trimester. Whether it is “normal” or hyperemesis gravidarum, it can make you feel miserable and even depressed. Remember that you are not alone. There is help available.
