According to the Cleveland Clinic, a cryptic pregnancy occurs when you are pregnant and don’t know it. You might be wondering, like I used to, how can a woman be pregnant and not know it?
But it does happen. Here are a few things that can cause a woman to not know she’s pregnant:
Most women know they are pregnant by 12 weeks, either because they missed a period, or because they were having pregnancy symptoms, which prompted them to take pregnancy test, which came back positive. But there are rare instances when the stars all align perfectly, and keep a pregnancy hidden.
Research finds that about 1 in 475 pregnancies go unnoticed until about 20 weeks gestation and about 1 in 2,500 pregnancies go unnoticed until delivery.
Women who are most likely to have a cryptic pregnancy are those who have recently given birth – likely because their bodies have not returned to normal after giving birth or because they did not think they could get pregnant so soon after delivery.
