Sometimes the Strongest Women Cry the Hardest: How to Help When She's Overwhelmed by an Unplanned Pregnancy - Alcove Health Women's Clinic Newport News, VA

Overwhelmed by an unplanned pregnancy

why the strongest women sometimes cry the hardest

Does someone you know feel overwhelmed by an unplanned pregnancy? Learn why many strong women struggle silently - and how you can offer hope and support when she needs it most.

“I feel so overwhelmed by an unplanned pregnancy.”

“It’s too much, I can’t do this.”

“This pregnancy was totally unplanned.”

Many of the women who walk into our consult rooms at Alcove Health Women’s Clinic look incredibly strong. They crack jokes, apologize for taking up our time, and insist that they’re fine.

But sometimes, in the middle of a conversation or at the beginning of the ultrasound, the weight they’ve been carrying begins to surface as the reality of feeling overwhelmed by an unplanned pregnancy sets in. The tears come unexpectedly, and the fear they’ve been trying to manage alone finally has somewhere to go.

Sometimes the Strongest Women Cry the Hardest

When women cry, it isn’t because they are lacking strength – it’s because they’ve been strong for too long:

  • carrying responsibilities
  • carrying disappointment
  • carrying financial pressure
  • carrying relationship struggles

Add an unexpected pregnancy on top of everything else and life can feel impossible. Women often feel overwhelmed by an unplanned pregnancy because they are trying to make decisions and hold everything together for everyone else.

Sometimes the strongest women cry the hardest because they’ve spent so much time believing they weren’t allowed to fall apart. At Alcove Health, we offer a space to pause and think. Our free and confidential services are here to help her process, ask questions, and learn about all of her options before making any pregnancy decisions.

Survival Mode Can Look Like Strength From the Outside

1) She may look calm because she has to be.

Some women have learned to function under pressure because their life has required it. Calm doesn’t necessarily mean peace, often it means she is doing everything she can do not to fall apart.

2) She may say, “I’m fine.”

When a woman says, “I’m fine,” she probably means “I don’t know if anyone can handle what I’m carrying”.  Survival mode teaches women to keep moving, keep smiling, and keep apologizing for needing help.

3) She may seem like one of the strongest women you know.

Strength does not mean she isn’t afraid, overwhelmed, or hurting. Sometimes the most courageous thing she can do is let someone sit with her, listen to her, and help her carry the weight.

At Alcove Health, she’ll have a confidential conversation with a trained Client Advocate before her free ultrasound. And then during the ultrasound, she’ll be able to talk about her pregnancy decision with our Registered Nurse.

  • Sometimes strength doesn’t look like holding everything together
  • Sometimes strength doesn’t look like making a fast decision
  • Sometimes strength doesn’t look like carrying it alone

Sometimes strength looks like finally allowing someone to help carry the weight. Sometimes the strongest women cry the hardest because they haven’t felt safe in a long, long time.
