If you use marijuana, a positive pregnancy test may have your mind wondering, “Is marijuana use during pregnancy safe?” It’s a surprisingly touchy subject; doctors do not want pregnant women to use marijuana, yet some pregnant women think it “is helpful” for certain symptoms during pregnancy.
As an Registered Nurse (RN) who works with pregnant women, most of whom are in their first trimester, I have personally seen a vast increase in the number of women who use marijuana while pregnant and the studies we will discuss below also show it is on the rise.
THE #1 REASON FOR MARIJUANA USE DURING PREGNANCY
The most common reason given for continuing marijuana use during pregnancy is: “It helps with the nausea.” I sympathize. Feeling nauseous is absolutely miserable. As an RN, though, I cannot condone it. There is no evidence validating the continued use of marijuana in any form during pregnancy.
That means it does not matter if you smoke, eat, or vape it, none of it is safe in pregnancy, nor is it safe for you or your baby to be exposed to it via secondhand smoke. According to the NIH “there is no research confirming that this is safe practice”.
THE RESULT OF MARIJUANA USE DURING PREGNANCY
One study done at the College of Medicine at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant showed that there was a “significant decrease in birth weight of 154 grams” when marijuana was used during the first trimester. That does not sound like a lot of weight to us, but a third of a pound for a developing baby can be significant, and it has been linked to health problems in children as they grow.
According to this same study: “Low birth weight is one of the strongest predictors of a child’s health and development long-term.” Marijuana use during pregnancy has been linked to higher rates of:
DOES IT HELP THAT MARIJUANA IS “NATURAL?”
Another common reason I often hear is, “it’s natural – it’s from nature, so I trust it way more than some pill from the doctor.” Again, that is a rationalization. It’s what we ‘want to be true’, but it is not.
Besides all the risks mentioned above, most marijuana plants are grown with pesticides and chemical fertilizers that are not natural and not necessarily safe for you or your baby; there are more than 500 chemicals found in marijuana other than THC. That does not seem so natural to me.
Studies have also shown that the amount of THC in the cannabis that is used today is higher than when these studies started, making its use even more dangerous. Researchers believe that as studies continue, the negative effects of marijuana use during pregnancy will only increase with the stronger THC concentrations and the increased use.
YOU HAVE SAFER OPTIONS
There is no evidence that marijuana use during pregnancy is safe at ANY stage. However, there are alternatives to marijuana. There are FDA-approved prescription medications that can be prescribed by your doctor that are much safer.
You might also find these alternatives helpful for nausea:
IF YOUR NAUSEA IS SEVERE
There are women who need to seek medical attention due to severe nausea and vomiting. If this is you, either contact your doctor or go to the ED for evaluation. However, if you are experiencing severe dehydration, especially with symptoms of lightheadedness or dizziness, you should not be operating a motor vehicle. You should seek assistance to get to the ED.
REMEMBER THERE ARE TWO OF YOU TO THINK ABOUT
There may be some of you out there that dismiss the alternatives that have been provided because you think marijuana is the best option for you because you feel it works. BUT remember it is not just you that you are taking care of now, and the facts show that marijuana use during pregnancy carries significant risks.
You are now responsible for the little person growing inside of you and they deserve your best efforts of providing them not only a healthy growing environment, but the best chance of growing up to be the best, quickest, smartest version of themselves as they can be. Don’t take that opportunity away from them by smoking marijuana.
