How to take a home pregnancy test

Taking a home pregnancy test seems simple, but timing, technique, and follow-up matter.

Some may say, “How hard can it be to take a home pregnancy test? You urinate on a stick and wait for the results.”

It may be that simple, but there are some things you should know about taking a home pregnancy test.

How Does A Home Pregnancy Test Work?

A pregnancy test is a way to determine if you’re pregnant. Pregnancy tests work by detecting human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), a hormone your body makes when you’re pregnant. If your pregnancy test is positive, it means you’re pregnant. If the test is negative, it means you aren’t pregnant. It’s very important to take a home pregnancy test as soon as you miss your period.

What Do You Need?

What you need to take a home pregnancy test is a pregnancy test kit. There are numerous options on the market, making it confusing to choose the right one. Some provide the results with the words “Pregnant” or “Not pregnant” and some have a “+” or “-“ sign. Either one is fine. You don’t have to buy the most expensive pregnancy test to get the best results. Spending more money on one does not mean it will yield better results.

What Are The Steps?

There are several steps in taking a home pregnancy test:

  • Step one is READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. Each test is very different and knowing how to perform the test is just as important as the results. Some require 3 minutes for results, while others require up to 10 minutes. Knowing how long to wait for the results is the best way to have optimal results. If you wait too long or read too soon, it may give you a false positive or a false negative result.
  • Step two is COLLECT THE URINE. If you have a disposable cup, you can urinate in the cup and take the test by dipping the stick into the cup. Another way would be to perform the test during mid-stream while urinating. The best time for accuracy is testing with the first morning urine, because it is most concentrated. Also, don’t overhydrate, as that can dilute your urine and cause a false positive or false negative.
  • Step three is SET A TIMER. This is where it is very important to do step one – read the instructions. Every home pregnancy test is different and timing the test correctly is of utmost importance. Checking the results too early or too late can give you a false reading. Set a timer on your phone or watch to know when it is the appropriate time to read the results.
  • Step four is READ YOUR RESULTS. As soon as the appropriate time is up, you should read your results. Some may have the word “Pregnant” while others may have a symbol. Reading your results at the right time is what matters. A positive test is a positive test.
