If you took the first abortion pill and now you’ve changed your mind, you may have an option to stop the abortion process.
The first pill in the medical abortion procedure, mifepristone, works to end a pregnancy by blocking progesterone. Progesterone is essential to sustain the life of the pregnancy.
The second pill, or set of pills, misoprostol, is taken 24-48 hours after taking mifepristone. Misoprostol causes the cervix to soften and the uterus to contract to expel the pregnancy.
According to Kinta, RN, BSN, Director of Nursing at Alcove Health Women’s Clinic:
“It’s during this time, the gap between the two pills, that there is an option to stop, or reverse, the medical abortion process. If a woman has taken the first pill, but not the second, a doctor may prescribe progesterone to stop the abortion process. But the timing is crucial – please begin treatment immediately.”
