Now that you’re pregnant, there are still so many questions that need to be answered. You took a pregnancy test and it was positive. You had an ultrasound and confirmed the viability of your pregnancy. So, now you know it’s in the right place, there’s cardiac activity, and you know how far along you are. Even after the pregnancy test and the ultrasound though, you still have one question that has not been answered: Who is my baby’s daddy?
Women normally get a period every month which means there’s a chance every month that they can become pregnant.
When trying to figure out when you got pregnant, it’s helpful to understand how ovulation works. Ovulation is a phase in your menstrual cycle when your ovary releases an egg. The egg travels down your fallopian tube, where it can be fertilized by sperm and start a pregnancy.
On average, this happens on day 14 of a 28-day menstrual cycle (day 1 is the first day of your period). An egg survives about 12 to 24 hours after ovulation before your body reabsorbs it.

Even if you know when you ovulate, calculating the exact day when you will get pregnant is not easy, especially if you have irregular cycles.
Typically, sperm may still be alive in a woman for five days, and fertilization with the egg may occur if it is released within these days. Predicting ovulation is a little easier if your cycles are regular; if they are irregular, it is hard to say when you’re ovulating (and when you may get pregnant).
So, how do you know if the guy you had sex with is your baby’s daddy? Even though your egg only lives for 24 hours, sperm can live in your uterus for between three and five days. This means sex may lead to pregnancy from about five days before ovulation to one day after.
This is where two things can make it really tricky to get an exact answer: having multiple partners and having irregular periods. If you had sex with more than one partner around the time you became pregnant, it may be difficult to know who the baby’s daddy is. And if your periods are irregular, figuring out when you got pregnant can be even harder.
🔑At a time when you’re looking for certainty, the hard truth is that, without a DNA test, there are no exact answers if you’re dealing with these factors. The key is even though you may not know who’s your baby’s daddy, you do know that you are your baby’s mom.
