Abortion: Changed Your Mind After The First Pill? Do 1 Thing Now Alcove Health Women's Clinic Newport News, VA

ABORTION: what if you changed your mind after you took the first pill?

Abortion pill reversal may be an option; here's what to do next.

If you took the first abortion pill and now you’ve changed your mind, you may have an option to stop the abortion process.

How does the abortion pill process work?

The first pill in the medical abortion procedure, mifepristone, works to end a pregnancy by blocking progesterone. Progesterone is essential to sustain the life of the pregnancy.

The second pill, or set of pills, misoprostol, is taken 24-48 hours after taking mifepristone. Misoprostol causes the cervix to soften and the uterus to contract to expel the pregnancy.

What if you took the first pill and now you’ve changed your mind?

According to Kinta, RN, BSN, Director of Nursing at Alcove Health Women’s Clinic:
“It’s during this time, the gap between the two pills, that there is an option to stop, or reverse, the medical abortion process. If a woman has taken the first pill, but not the second, a doctor may prescribe progesterone to stop the abortion process. But the timing is crucial – please begin treatment immediately.”

Does abortion pill reversal work?

Over half of the women who start the abortion reversal protocol are able to save their pregnancies. Progesterone has been used safely in pregnancies since the 1950s. It is commonly used to prevent miscarriage.

If you changed your mind, what do you do now?

Here at Alcove Health, we do not prescribe progesterone. If you’ve taken the first pill and now you’ve changed your mind, stop reading and reach out to the abortion pill reversal hotline immediately using one of these contact options:

  • Call the abortion pill reversal hotline
  • Live Chat with someone from the abortion pill reversal hotline

During your contact, you will be evaluated to see if a reversal is possible. If it is possible, you will be connected with a medical provider in your area to start the abortion reversal process.

If you wish to continue your pregnancy, do not take the 2nd pill, misoprostol, in the abortion pill pack.

What if you took the first pill against your will?

  1. Seek medical care immediately
  2. Tell medical staff exactly what you suspect
  3. Contact law enforcement and preserve evidence

🧠Main point: If you’ve taken the first pill in a medical abortion process, and you wish to continue your pregnancy, reach out immediately to see if the abortion pill reversal is possible for you and your pregnancy.
