The pregnancy test was positive! Looking at the pregnancy test, the question for me would be … who should I tell first???
As someone in my 20s, this would be scary and completely overwhelming. I think I’d be too stressed to keep that news to myself. I’d have to tell someone! It’s relieving not to have to carry the weight of that news alone, and it can be beneficial in helping us process it too.
The first person I would go to is my partner. In most cases I would suggest telling him first. Communication plays a big part in maintaining a good and healthy relationship. Plus, your partner is probably one of the most important people in your life.
However, there is a caveat…
They don’t have to be the first person you tell if:
If I don’t tell my partner first, then who should I tell first?
I would go to a trusted friend or mentor if I didn’t feel ready to go to my partner or family yet. That doesn’t mean don’t talk to them. It means giving yourself space to process this news so you can approach those conversations with them with clarity and a level-head.
A positive pregnancy test is BIG news! It’s okay to give yourself space to reflect and understand your feelings about it. Sometimes that looks like verbally processing it with a friend.
It’s especially valuable if your friend or mentor can just listen without giving you advice or telling you what to do. At least for me, I would just want to be heard. I don’t need anyone to “fix” it or do anything. Just listen.
Remember: The opinion that matters the most is yours (and your partner’s) because it’s ultimately your pregnancy decision.
When it comes to “who should I tell first?”, personally, family wouldn’t be my first choice. If anything, I would go to my aunt or my sister. However, every situation is different and every family relationship and dynamic is different. Some families are closer to each other, so maybe that is more comfortable for you than going to someone else.
If you are a teenager, I would 100% tell your parent(s) at some point unless that relationship does not feel safe. You don’t necessarily have to tell your parent(s) right away, and like I said it’s okay to take time to process it and figure out how to approach the conversation. Your parent(s) had you, so more than likely they can help you.
But if telling the people closest to you is a challenge (for whatever reason), I want you to know there is hope and help.
Alcove Health Women’s Clinic is great option if:
But you don’t have to resonate with any of these to go to Alcove Health. Your reason for coming here is not limited to the four bullet points I wrote down.

FAQs
Can I apply for Virginia Medicaid if I’m pregnant?
Yes. Pregnancy may qualify you for Medicaid even if you were previously denied before you were pregnant.
I’m still wondering, Who should I tell first about my pregnancy? as I’m trying to make a pregnancy decision. Is it odd to come to my Alcove appointment alone?
No. Every week we see women who choose to come alone to their appointment and women who choose to bring someone with them. You are welcome to include one guest, but that offer is for your comfort. If you’re more comfortable coming alone, know that many women choose to process their pregnancy this way at first.
