Unless you are pregnant or have some type of gynecological issues, you have probably never heard of or thought about a transvaginal ultrasound.
When you come to Alcove Health for a medical appointment, you will be assessed by a registered nurse to see if you qualify for a same day ultrasound. Many women receive an ultrasound during their first appointment, but sometimes it is scheduled for a later date.
For most women, the idea of a transvaginal ultrasound is much worse than the actual procedure, due to fear of the unknown. Here at Alcove Health, ultrasounds begin with an abdominal scan and typically proceed to a transvaginal ultrasound, per protocol. The transvaginal ultrasound helps us get a closer look at the pregnancy and obtain more accurate measurements in early pregnancy.
For a transvaginal ultrasound, you will be asked to empty your bladder, undress from the waist down, and a drape will be provided for your comfort and privacy. A small, wand-like transducer is used for the next step. This transducer has a gel-filled, latex-free, lubricated cover and is inserted into the vagina by you or the nurse.
You may feel a little discomfort or pressure, but it should not hurt. It may feel “odd” but if for some reason you do feel pain, we want you to speak-up. The purpose of the transvaginal ultrasound is for better visualization of the pregnancy, not your discomfort.
