Is Abortion Painful?

Your health is worth it.  And your questions deserve answers.

No one enjoys a medical procedure.  No one.  Most involve some degree of pain and abortion is no exception.  Every abortion comes with its own set of risks and potential pain.  But before you get worked up and anxious, there is at least one thing you need to confirm.  It may sound obvious, but you need to confirm you are pregnant.  So even before you start asking “Is abortion painful?”, consider finding a place where you can get a free pregnancy test as your first step.

But just confirming that you are pregnant isn’t enough.  You need more information.  You need to confirm that your pregnancy is in the right place.  Because if it’s outside the uterus, that is a medical emergency that requires immediate medical attention.  It’s called an ectopic pregnancy and it can be life threatening, not to mention painful. Furthermore, you need to make sure there’s a heartbeat.  After all, without a heartbeat you’ll likely experience a spontaneous abortion, also known as a miscarriage.  You also need to find out how far along you are.  The age of your pregnancy will impact what abortion options are available to you.  So, while it won’t answer your question “Is abortion painful”, a free ultrasound should be next up on your list.

But just confirming that your pregnant and confirming all the information an ultrasound can provide still isn’t enough!  You also need to make sure you don’t have an active STI.  Having an STI can be a painful experience on its own but having an abortion with an active STI can lead to even more serious medical problems.  Finding a place to go where you can get a free STI test should be third on your list.

Once you have that information, you’ll be ready to meet with a registered nurse for abortion education.  That is the best place to have your question answered “Is abortion painful?”  Because while an RN may not be able to give you a definitive answer to your question, the information gained by the free ultrasound can be incredibly helpful in telling you what most women in similar stages of pregnancy have reported.

That’s a pretty extensive to-do list.  But your health is worth it.  And your question deserves an answer.  We are Alcove Health Women’s Clinic in Newport News and we provide pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, and STI testing.  And we provide it all at no cost!  We also offer options consultations, so you will have a safe space to talk to one of our advocates about your unique situation.  Call us today or click here to request an appointment Let us help you get the information you need.
