Do I Need An Ultrasound?

"A limited OB ultrasound can help you make YOUR best pregnancy decision"

You recently found out you are pregnant, and you are undecided about your pregnancy.  Why are people telling you to get an ultrasound?  That is because a free ultrasound can give you IMPORTANT information that you can only get by receiving an ultrasound. Wherever you are in your decision-making process, you don’t have all the information you need until you’ve had an ultrasound. The 3 most important things you will learn from a limited OB ultrasound are: pregnancy location, viability, and estimated gestational age.  Let us break these down a little more.

Pregnancy location is confirming the pregnancy is in the uterus and not somewhere else, like the fallopian tube – that would be an ectopic pregnancy.  An ectopic pregnancy can be a life-threatening condition, must be evaluated right away, and requires specific medical interventions that must be determined by a doctor.

Second, is there a heartbeat?  The baby’s heart starts beating just 21 days after conception, but the sad statistical fact is that 15-20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage.  It is important to know if your baby has a heartbeat before you make any pregnancy decisions.

Thirdly, what is the estimated gestational age (EGA) of the baby, or more simply put, how far along am I and when would I be due?  This is a very important piece of the decision-making process because your baby’s gestational age plays a big role in what options are available to you if you chose not to parent.  The EGA is determined by obtaining specific measurements of the baby to determine how far along you are in your pregnancy and when the baby would likely be due.

Does Abortion Hurt

Does Abortion Hurt?

There Is No Easy Answer

Does abortion hurt?

That’s a great question and one we hear often at Alcove Health. Unfortunately, there is no easy answer. The pain and discomfort caused by an abortion will vary widely from woman to woman. Part of that reason is that the procedure itself is very different depending on the gestational age of the pregnancy.

A medical abortion varies greatly from a surgical one.  But even a medical one can be very different from one woman to the next. Part of what we do here at Alcove Health is help women accurately date their pregnancy so they can have the full and complete information about what to expect if they choose abortion.  A Registered Nurse will assess each of our clients for a free ultrasound, which is vital in determining not only the gestational age of the pregnancy but whether the pregnancy appears to be viable in the first place.  The ultrasound is also extremely important in ruling out the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy, which is very dangerous requiring immediate medical attention.  Each ultrasound is performed by a trained Registered Nurse and reviewed by a Medical Doctor typically within 24 hours.  Following a free ultrasound, our clients will sit down with a Registered Nurse who will walk them through the types of abortions available to them based on the information gained from the ultrasound and what they can expect in terms of procedures and risks.

So in a nutshell, we can’t tell you exactly what your level of pain and discomfort might be.  But we can tell you what to expect, generally speaking.  It is our goal at Alcove Health that each and every client will have all the information they need to make an informed decision by the time they leave our clinic. In addition to the registered nurse, our clients are also provided an opportunity to sit and discuss their own personal situation with a trained client advocate.  Just as no two pregnancies are alike, we understand that no two situations are alike and there is tremendous value in processing your thoughts and feelings about your situation.  You are a unique woman, with a unique situation, facing a unique pregnancy. We are here to help.
