Do I Need An Ultrasound?
"A limited OB ultrasound can help you make YOUR best pregnancy decision"
You recently found out you are pregnant, and you are undecided about your pregnancy. Why are people telling you to get an ultrasound? That is because a free ultrasound can give you IMPORTANT information that you can only get by receiving an ultrasound. Wherever you are in your decision-making process, you don’t have all the information you need until you’ve had an ultrasound. The 3 most important things you will learn from a limited OB ultrasound are: pregnancy location, viability, and estimated gestational age. Let us break these down a little more.
Pregnancy location is confirming the pregnancy is in the uterus and not somewhere else, like the fallopian tube – that would be an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy can be a life-threatening condition, must be evaluated right away, and requires specific medical interventions that must be determined by a doctor.
Second, is there a heartbeat? The baby’s heart starts beating just 21 days after conception, but the sad statistical fact is that 15-20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. It is important to know if your baby has a heartbeat before you make any pregnancy decisions.
Thirdly, what is the estimated gestational age (EGA) of the baby, or more simply put, how far along am I and when would I be due? This is a very important piece of the decision-making process because your baby’s gestational age plays a big role in what options are available to you if you chose not to parent. The EGA is determined by obtaining specific measurements of the baby to determine how far along you are in your pregnancy and when the baby would likely be due.
