Is it Wrong to Bring a Child Into this World?

If this a question you are grappling with, give yourself the necessary space and time to think it through

Perhaps you’ve heard the question. Perhaps you’ve asked it yourselfPerhaps for the first time in your life a positive pregnancy test has made it more than rhetorical – Is it wrong to bring a child into this world? It’s a question human beings have been asking for a long time. Throw in a worldwide pandemic, the threat of nuclear war, or a protestor with the sign “I wish my mom had aborted me” and one can’t help but think maybeMaybe it is wrong to add another human being to this insufferable place. And there’s nothing like an unplanned pregnancy to turn your world upside down and make you ponder such a deep dark question.

If only you could look into the future and ask your unborn child if they want to be here. But no, that’s not possible. This is a decision you must make. Let me offer at least three reasons why you might want to consider bringing a child into this world.

First, let’s consider the times. No doubt this is a dark time in human history. Never before has a worldwide pandemic had such profound and long-lasting consequences. Not only have more than one million people died, but billions more continue to live under the threat of serious illness. And then there is the possibility of nuclear war because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. And one doesn’t have to look solely to worldwide or global conflicts. There are problems in our own country as well; racial tensions, political tensions, environmental concerns, to name a few. All valid. All deeply concerning.

But here’s the truth. There has always been sickness. There has always been war. There has always been tension.  Looking to our past we see life in the Middle Ages was brutal, full of death and disease. To live during any of the great world wars has been the destiny of billions. And yet, people have always continued to have children. If people then had stopped hoping for a brighter future and a better world, where would that leave us today? It just might be that love of family and a desire to provide and protect those we love might be the very fuel that compels us to keep reproducing.

Second, let’s consider the economy. Some will argue our current economic climate is too uncertain, too unstable, to create the kind of world necessary for children to flourish. But any good business student can tell you there have always been and there will always be business cycles. Many living today remember the high inflation and gas lines in the 70’s.  As we approach double digit inflation once again, we realize this too shall pass. Ask any baby boomer and they are just as likely to have held a mortgage with a 10% mortgage rate (typical in the 80’s) as one at 2% (more recent). You can take a look at historical mortgage interest rates here. So remember, times change. This may be a challenging time to bring a child into this world, but if you follow some basic common-sense rules (like saving 10% of what you earn and living on less than you make), you will weather this storm and can reasonably expect better times to come.

Finally, and most importantly, let’s consider the future. Many will argue that more children mean a further strain on planet Earth’s resources. This may be true. The UN estimates our planet will add another 2 billion residents in the next 30 years, placing the population at about 9.7 billion people. However, it is also true that there is a slowing global fertility rate that might push the fertility rate below the 2.1 births per woman necessary to avoid an overall population decline in the long run. By 2050 the UN expects as many as 55 countries will have declining populations due to declining fertility rates. So the concern about the impact on future resources is at least mitigated by the slowing global fertility rate. You can read more about these estimates here.

So if it is good and right to at least think about the negative impact more children might have on this planet, is it not also good and right to think about the potential good? In other words, what is the potential positive future impact of these children? Well, for one thing, how about their minds? How about their creativity? How about their determination and drive? Our planet has many problems, yes. But it will take new and innovative ideas to solve those problems. If everyone decides the negative outweighs the positive, that fertility rate might just drop to the point where we deprive this world of the very thing it needs to survive…the human race.

So while each person must decide for themselves whether or not to bring a child into this world, it is important to remember there is much to consider. If you are facing an unplanned pregnancy, and this a question you are grappling with, give yourself the necessary space and time to think it through.

At Alcove Health Women’s Clinic in Newport News, VA, we understand this is a weighty decision. We want to give you a safe place to process all of your options and to get the medically necessary information you need to make an informed decision. Unplanned Pregnancy

An unplanned pregnancy doesn’t mean you have to change your goals, it just means you need to make a plan.

If you’re reading this, you’re probably wondering what to do next. A positive pregnancy test may have you feeling overwhelmed with all the concerns that come with an unplanned pregnancy.

There are definitely things to do – and we will help with that. But first, let’s take a minute to think about a few things in a different way.

Imagine a day that you’ve gotten up early enough to shower, eat breakfast, do your hair, and STILL be on time for class or work. What a great feeling, right? You pat yourself on the back and head out with full vibes of positivity. You jump in the car and head down the interstate. Then…all of a sudden you see a sign that says, “DETOUR AHEAD” or “ROAD CLOSED”.

What do you do now?

You have to change your morning routine. You have to recalculate your arrival time. You have to rethink where you were planning to park. You may be late, but you do not have to give up on getting to class or work. You just have to stop and figure out how to adjust to this unplanned event.

Now back to you – today. If you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy you may feel the same way.

So what should you do now? You’re not alone – we’re here to help with that.

    • Second, consider your options. A detour does not mean you cannot move forward. A detour offers you an opportunity to consider other routes. You can still arrive at your destination and reach your goal. At Alcove Health, we provide FREE options consultations and a safe space to process your thoughts and feelings.
    • Third, remember that unplanned does not mean impossible, insurmountable, or hopeless! The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines unplanned as “not expected or intended.” What the definition does not include are words like insurmountable, impossible, or hopeless. Having an unplanned pregnancy does not mean that it is no longer possible to achieve your goals. It does not mean that your life or the life of your child will be dim and hopeless. Sometimes the best part of the journey is the unexpected detour that allows you to discover amazing things you would never have seen.
  • If you’re trying to figure out how to handle the detour of an unplanned pregnancy in your life – contact us! Call or click here to request your free medical appointment. Here at Alcove Health, we see you and we want to help. Our free services including pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, options consults – and even STI testing. A detour doesn’t mean your life is over; it means it’s time to make a plan. We can help with that!

What Makes a Condom Fail?

What makes a condom fail?
What makes a condom fail?

What Makes a Condom Fail?

Condoms are 98% effective at preventing pregnancy and STIs like gonorrhea, chlamydia, and trich if they are used properly and every time you have sex. The important takeaway here is properly and every time. STI testing is so important because condoms fail if not used properly.

If your boyfriend has been storing his condoms in his wallet for the last few years just waiting for a chance to use them, they are probably expired. That’s right, condom boxes and packages have expiration dates! Or let’s say he has kept them in the glove box of his car, through the cold of winter and the heat of summer – the chances of them still being effective are pretty low. These conditions can make condoms fail.

So it is important that condoms be used before their expiration date. You also want to make sure the condom isn’t worn down from being carried around and that the package isn’t opened by something sharp – if you want it to work. It’s also important that the condom is the right size, you have proper lubrication, and there is room left at the tip to prevent breakage.

It is difficult enough to get him to use one, so make sure it is still in good working condition when he does. After all, why would you wear one just to have the condom fail?

If by some chance the condom breaks during sex, you need to stop immediately and use a new one. But there will still be questions in the back of your mind – What if I’m pregnant? What if he gave me an STI? Was I exposed long enough for either of these to happen?

When a condom breaks, there is always a chance that a pregnancy could occur or an STI could have been transferred.  Remember that many people who have an STI are not aware that they have one – so you can’t rely on symptoms to let you know if you’ve been exposed! A condom fail is a sign that you need to be tested – for pregnancy and an STI.

So, if you missed your period or have a positive pregnancy test, rather than sitting at home stressing about being pregnant and having an STI, click here or call to request your free appointment at Alcove Health. Located in Newport News, we provide a pregnancy test with each STI appointment and we offer STI testing with every pregnancy appointment. All of our services are provided for free – and yes, when we say free, we mean completely free. So stop worrying about your condom fail and get peace of mind. Pregnant In College

Pregnant In College

Being pregnant in college doesn’t mean you have to give up on your dreams, it just means you need to make a plan.

So you’re in college. You’re finally getting back and forth to your classes on time. You’ve gotten acquainted with your roommates and worked out any discomfort or issues. You’ve even managed to connect with your professors. You’re doing well and feeling good about it. But then you miss you period. Don’t panic! If you’re pregnant in college, your first step is a pregnancy test and an ultrasound so you can process your pregnancy and understand your options. We can help with both of those.

Before you let your mind run wild with all the what ifs, what to do, what not to do, who to tell, or who to call….

Call Us! Call Alcove Health Women’s Clinic. We can provide a free pregnancy test and a free ultrasound for confirmation. We can also give you a safe and judgement-free space to process your thoughts and feelings, and discuss your options with a trained client advocate.

If you are pregnant in college, here are some things you should know.

    1. You don’t have to choose between parenting and college. You can do both! Parents In College reported that “Student parents are often motivated to pursue college by a desire to improve their children’s lives” and their study indicated that “student parents achieve higher grade point averages (GPA) than other students”. With the right kinds of support, you can still accomplish your educational goals.
    1. You don’t have to do it alone! You can build a network of family, friends, and other individuals who will provide the emotional and tangible support you will need. There are also community agencies and organizations that are able to provide assistance to meet your specific needs. At Alcove Health Women’s Clinic, we provide information to connect you with community resources so you can get the support and help you need!
    1. And guess who else can help if you’re pregnant in college….your school’s Title IX Coordinator. Do you know there is a federal law that prohibits schools (who receive federal funding) from discriminating against you based on your being pregnant or being a parent? Title IX protects the educational rights of pregnant and parenting students! Check this out:

“Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”), 20 U.S.C. §1681 et seq., is a Federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex—including pregnancy and parental status—in educational programs and activities.”

“All public and private schools, school districts, colleges, and universities receiving any Federal funds (“schools”) must comply with Title IX.

    1. Colleges or universities cannot revoke your scholarship or campus housing because of your pregnancy! In fact, some schools have family housing units available on campus or within the community.
    1. You can meet with your schools Title IX Coordinator to learn how your school can help support you in continuing your education. You can also contact the U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights, at (800) 421-3481 or ocr@ed.gov

Knowing your rights is important. We believe in you. We want to help. Being pregnant in college doesn’t mean you have to give up on your dreams (blog link), it just means you need to make a plan. We’ve helped women from Thomas Nelson Community College, Christopher Newport College, Hampton University, and the College of William and Mary– and we can help you, too. Click here or call us today so we can give you the help and support you need.

Can My Pregnancy Test Be Wrong?

Can My Pregnancy Test Be Wrong?
Can My Pregnancy Test Be Wrong?

Can My Pregnancy Test Be Wrong?

The answer you get with a home pregnancy test can be wrong - and it can take one of our lab-grade pregnancy tests to figure it out.

Last year, 15 women entered our clinic thinking they were pregnant only to receive a negative result on a no-cost lab-grade pregnancy test administered by one of our Registered Nurses. You see, the answer they got on their home pregnancy test was wrong – and it took one of our lab-grade pregnancy tests to figure it out.

For each woman, within the course of a few minutes, her whole life changed.

For some, there was sadness. They wanted to be pregnant. The negative test was a loss. They had already dreamt of the baby they thought they were carrying.

For others, though, this news was met with relief. Happiness. Almost like a secret escape hatch from the nightmare they were living. They didn’t want to be pregnant. They came to our clinic to discuss options and get more information. And with one negative test, everything was different.

It’s rare, but it is possible to get a positive result from a home pregnancy test when you’re not even pregnant.

Sure, store-bought pregnancy tests – yes, even the really cheap ones – are usually accurate when used correctly. But for 15 of our clients last year, “usually accurate” wasn’t accurate at all.

Ultimately, a positive pregnancy test alone doesn’t give enough confidence when you’re making a major life decision about your next steps.

Like whether or not you want an abortion. Abortions are expensive. So, why would you pay for one – based on the results from an at-home pregnancy test – when you may not even have a pregnancy to abort?

And abortions are costly to more than just your wallet. There’s also the cost to your emotional health.

Most women don’t come to the decision to have an abortion with delight and excitement. The language of our culture may call the right to abortion “empowering;” but when it becomes personal – for many women – abortion is an answer they consider only when other things have gone wrong. And it’s not a happy answer.

That’s why women usually find us for help recovering from an abortion about 10 years after their abortion. Because it still hurts – emotionally. Because it was not part of the plan for their lives. So why would you pay the high price with your heart for an abortion on a baby that doesn’t exist? Not knowing is costly to your emotional health.

Add to that the additional reality that positive home pregnancy tests can be misleading if you assume the positive result means you have a viable pregnancy. You can get a positive pregnancy test even if you’re in the process of miscarrying or have already lost the pregnancy.

You see, an abortion on a pregnancy that doesn’t exist or isn’t alive is still an abortion to the woman who receives it. She’ll never know the difference.

But you can know – with a lab-grade pregnancy test and an ultrasound. You don’t have to wonder if your pregnancy test was wrong. Alcove Health Women’s Clinic can give you the answers you need so that you can know what’s going on inside your body. Then you can make a wise choice for your wallet and your heart.

Even more, all of Alcove Health’s medical services (pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, and STI testing) are available at no cost to you. So you don’t have to make a decision based on incorrect or incomplete information. You could be one of these 15 women – call or click here to make an appointment today for your confidential appointment. Get the answers you deserve.

I’m Afraid I’m Pregnant, Do I Need An STI Test?

I’m afraid I’m pregnant, do I need an STI test?
I’m afraid I’m pregnant, do I need an STI test?

I’m afraid I’m pregnant, do I need an STI test?

If it's possible that you may be pregnant, it's also possible that you may have an STI

There are some things in life that you absolutely must know for sure! There is no room for guessing games, no space for maybes. Some things are just too important. Knowing whether or not you are pregnant is definitely at the top of the list. And knowing if you have an STI is next in line. If it is possible that you may be pregnant, it is also possible that you may have an STI. Let’s face it. If you’ve had unprotected sex, you need an STI test and a pregnancy test.

Let us help you get the answers you need. Alcove Health Women’s Clinic provides free and confidential pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, options consultations, and STI testing. These services will answer the pregnancy question and help you get the information you need to decide your next steps.

You may be so concerned with a pregnancy, that you’re not even thinking about an STI. But you should. Here’s why:

    • You can have an STI without knowing it. You can have an STI and have no symptoms. According to the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion most STIs “either do not produce any symptoms or signs, or they produce symptoms so mild that they are unnoticed”.
    • You may have symptoms, but mistakenly think the symptoms are related to something else.
    • You or your partner may have passed on an infection from a previous sexual partner, without knowing it. Don’t just take his word!
    • An STI can be spread in more than one way. Many STIs can spread through oral sex.
    • It’s important to TEST and RETEST! The Center for Disease Control recommends that persons who have been treated for chlamydia and gonorrhea retest 3 months after being treated.

Whether or not you are pregnant or have an STI are not the kinds of questions you want to leave unanswered. An untreated STI can lead to serious medical conditions  which can impact your health, both now and later. It may feel a little embarrassing to talk about, but protecting your sexual health is worth a little discomfort.

    • In 2018, 26 million cases of STIs were reported to the CDC. Over half of those cases were reported in young adults, ages 15 to 24.
    • In 2019, 1,808,703 cases of chlamydia and 616,392 cases of gonorrhea were reported to the Center for Disease Control. Almost 2/3 of the chlamydia cases were in people ages 15 to 24.

Get a pregnancy test and an STI test so you can know for sure. Call Alcove Health Women’s Clinic. We provide free and confidential pregnancy tests and STI testing. If your STI test is positive, we can also provide you with information on where to go to receive confidential treatment. Alcove Health Women’s Clinic understands this is a sensitive subject and we are waiting to provide a safe, supportive, judgement-free space for you to get the answers you need, so you can know for sure. I’m Afraid to Give Birth

afraid to give birth
afraid to give birth

I’m Afraid to Give Birth

You have options. Don’t allow the fear of giving birth to be the only, or even the most important factor!

Any medical procedure, even one as natural as giving birth, can be terrifying if it is something you’ve never faced.  Add to that the stress and anxiety of an unplanned pregnancy and it can be easy to feel overwhelmed.  But don’t let being afraid to give birth get the best of you; first take a deep breath and then consider finding a place where you can get a free pregnancy test. After all, it’s important to confirm your pregnancy with a medical professional before you do anything else!

If you are in fact facing an unplanned pregnancy, fear of giving birth might be a major concern for you. It may impact how you think about your options.  Finding a place that will not only confirm your pregnancy, but also provide options counseling is important.  You have options.  If this is your first pregnancy, being afraid to give birth is typical; however, don’t allow fear to be the only, or even the most important factor!

For many women, it’s hard to imagine that our bodies are able to grow and change to carry a baby the size of a large watermelon!  We look at our naked bodies in the mirror and just can’t understand how that is possible.  What’s more we can’t wrap our minds around the idea of a baby passing through our birth canal.  We imagine that must be the most painful, horrible thing on earth.

But the truth is that our bodies are designed to adapt to a growing baby.  After all, it takes a full nine months for the baby to become full term.  In addition, our bodies are also designed for the process of giving birth.  Labor can be fast and furious, but more often it is slow and predictable, taking many hours to cause the necessary changes to allow for the birth of a baby.

Thankfully, we live in a time when there are many options for pain management.  Regardless of how well you tolerate pain, it’s important for every pregnant patient to talk to her doctor and put a plan in place.  It’s every bit as true for those who want to minimize the pain as it is for those who want to go all natural.  The important thing is to be honest with your provider about your fears and allow him or her to help you formulate the best plan for you.

Facing an unplanned pregnancy is scary enough.  Being afraid to give birth can be overwhelming. Don’t allow fear to push you towards one option.  Find a place that will talk to you about all of your options and provide you with the medical information you need to make an informed decision.  At Alcove Health Women’s Clinic in Newport News we can do just that.  We offer a safe place for you to talk to someone and we have registered nurses who can help you with the medical questions you might have.  And it’s all free of charge to you.  Give us a call today at 757-591-8141.  We are here for you.

I’m Pregnant and I’m Scared

I'm Pregnant and I'm Scared
I'm Pregnant and I'm Scared

I'm pregnant and i'm scared

An unplanned pregnancy feels scary and lonely. But you aren’t alone.

Even before you receive your free pregnancy test, you’re probably scared.

After all, you’ve seen those two lines on the pregnancy test you took at home. You knew pregnancy was a possibility, but seeing the test makes it all so real.

It’s right there in the 2nd line of your pregnancy test – positive.

And then comes the fear.

An unplanned pregnancy feels scary and lonely. But you aren’t alone.

Here at Alcove Health, we see you and we want to help. So take a deep breath and let’s settle some of this fear.

You have options – whether you’re considering an abortion or carrying the pregnancy to term. But before you chase down all your options (even in your mind), what you need first is more information.

But I have a positive pregnancy test, what else could I possibly need to know? you may be asking yourself.

Actually, there’s a lot you don’t know. And unknowns often cause fear.

First, you need a lab-grade pregnancy test to verify that your test result is accurate – we do that at no-cost right here at Alcove Health.

Then, if your test is positive, you need an ultrasound, so you can know if the pregnancy is ectopic (a health emergency) and so you can know if the pregnancy is in the process of miscarrying – we do that at no-cost right here at Alcove Health.

Finally, you need STI/STD testing, especially if you are considering an abortion – yep, we also do that at no-cost right here at Alcove Health.

Here at Alcove Health Women’s clinic, we provide even more – like an options consultation and a private conversation with one of our Registered Nurses. But the cost isn’t more; it’s always the same – free.

Look, we understand fear. That’s why we’re a safe space for you to process your feelings, understand your options, and receive important medical services so you can make the best decision for your reproductive health.

A lot of times fear is based on the unknowns. Worrying and stressing won’t help. You know what will help? Getting the information you need to make a safe choice. You can get all the information you need right here at Alcove Health.

Call Alcove Health in Newport News and make us your first contact. You’ll learn all your options. You’ll pay nothing. And you’ll gain everything you need to make a decision that’s right for you.
